15 years old need a ACL brace..What one is good?
« on: December 01, 2004, 12:14:45 AM »
Hi
I am 15 years old and i just got ACL surgery done in August. I am 4 months post op. Doing ok. Not the greatest. But i am needing a brace in order to play sports. My PT and everyone else thinks that i should have one. But my OS doesn't believe that i need one. WHat should i do?
What can of brace would be best to get?

Research has shown that braces cannot protect the ACL against trauma in the majority of sporting situation.   It is used mainly for the patient's head rather than the knee.  However, if you have had other ligament injuries, braces are much more useful at control uniplanar stress rather than the typical rotational forces which cause the ACL tear.  If you OS is not insisting on a brace, follow his recommendations, if you feel like you truly need something try a knee sleeve.

Hey! I don't really have any advice on a brace. I just wanted to say I had my ACL reconstruction at 15 too (I'm 16 now.) Anyways I was just wondering how it was for you.

Atsoccer...so a brace is not really needed?..I had an acl  and mcl tear..Maybe thats why I need it?..I really cant make up my mind on getting the other brace or not..my insurance  refuses to pay for it...so I would have to buy it my self....(oh yeah shelbus09 dont get  the don joy acl brace, trust me...) any how I want too see what my doc thinks about just going without the brace...I am  really mad that he ordered  me the don-joy brace.. He should know better....

Nope, a brace is not necessary.  Unless it was a really severe injury none of my athletes have ever been put in a functional brace.
