secound   knee replacement
« on: November 22, 2004, 02:31:39 PM »
I had a knee replacement 2yrs ago and am worse of than every.I have to go back in hospital in the next 2 weeks and I am trying to find out how someone as got on with a secound knee replacement.Has I have been told that it is worse than the frist one.I already lost my knee cap many years ago and was told this would cause problems for the knee replacement anyway.
But as it stands now is I take a large dose of morphine to control the pain I am in.So I have to go back in hospital for another operation. But  I was hoping to find out about how a secound knee replacement affects the leg.I am talking about a 2nd replacement on the same leg.
on talking to a nurse who I got freindly with she said it was far worse than the frist one so if any body as any info on this or has gone thro a 2nd replacement I would love to hear how u got on as it may help me to decide to go for it if I am offered it.,I realise we are all different in how we cope with pain ect but I  only have 2weeks to find out ,PLEASE PLEASE if any one can help in anyway let me know thank you.

Hey there Julie

I have found some very useful information that you should read through to help inform yourself before making your decision...

This Link gives a VERY good description about the risks and benefits of a Second TKR (TKR Revision) on the same leg of course!!

http://www.hipsandknees.com/knee/revisionkneesurgery.htm

Next....as you have had a  patellectomy (kneecap removed) this does make the surgery more difficult than someone with a normal patella. Have a look at the links at the bottom of the main web page and read the ones about TKR after patellectomy

Patella in TKR:
http://www.wheelessonline.com/o12/95.htm

Also. This link gives detailed results of a scientific study into TKRs with no patella.

http://www.wheelessonline.com/l9/104.htm

Hope this info helps you a bit but it seems like the main things you should be looking at right now are
1/ Just how bad is the knee/leg at the minute? Is it bad enough to risk the surgery that may well improve it but could also (worst case) make it worse
2/ Ensure that the only surgeon you let near such a highly complex operation is a VERY skilled one who specialises in TKRs and TKR revisions

Im not sure what country your from but if your UK based (like me) then I can appreciate this is easier said than done.

Good Luck
