Hi Jules,
just read through your diary, shame ACI did't work I had mine done in 2003 but have yet to notice a vast improvement, still feels like it did before. I don't know of any that have actually said it was worth the stress and pain. Just had athroscopy on the other knee again to relieve ligament pressure, I believe that I have had the ligament split or it was split haven't seen the consultant yet so still in the dark.
Glad all has eventually worked out for you.
Had both knees Athroscopy 14th May 2003, ACI 27th June 2003 now have full motion and just slight aching if i don't get enough exercise.  25th August 2006 had athroscopy on left knee to investigate bruising, they had to split my ligament to releive the pressure, or as far as I know at present.

Hi Allen,
Yes I think really it only works for those with single small lesions, I don't think theres that many with patella femoral joint lesions thats its worked for.
What will your next step be now?

Hi Jules,
i think i'm going to leave my right knee alone now after 3years from ACI still not great but is there any other option, i'm only 33.
Left knee however shows fine on athroscopy but isn't healing now into second week and still on crutches, still hasn't solved the problem of my leg just bruising for no reason, they're still looking into it.
Not quite so bad for a bloke in shorts though if he has a bruised leg but not great when you don't know why it does it.

Hows yours bearing up these days?

Speak soon
Allan

Allen,
There are always options, don't give up just because your only 33 years old.
As for the bruising, are you taking ibruprofen or volotrol? And did you prior to the op?
As these medications can cause more intense and easier bruising.
Its obviously something to do with your blood I think to easily bruise.

I'm not too bad, now just approaching week four post left PFR and its still hard to walk on, just using one stick, and whilst sitting if I bend then go to straighten the leg, that where post the pain is now.Though there is some pain on walking, no swelling unless I do too much and then its only at the top of the knee. If i stand for more than 10 minutes, the knee feels like it swells inside and makes it stiff, but soon goes when its rested, thats the same with the TKR, but takes about 20 minutes standing in one spot.
The TKR knee is now just over 4 months post op now and is generally great, so glad I had it done.

So all in all not too bad, can't wait for another 4 weeks, whereby I hope that I will be back at work and relatively pain free!

Hope they sort you out.
Regards
Jules

Hi 6 weeks post left PFR.

Well feel really down tonight, went to see the OS today, says I will need yet another op for adhesions and had to have an xray, but by the time I got back to the clinic it was shut, but I took a look at it and on the PKR knee, if you imagine looking down at your left knee, on the xray the medial part (inner side) of the patella is still touching the femoral joint on that edge? So that could be the cause of the OA pain I'm still feeling?
I have to see him in 8 weeks time, so he can then see the xray and decide if he will go in again!!  :'(

Looks like I may not be going back to work after all, and I could loose my job altogether this time!!  :'(

So fed up with it all, I was hoping this was it for a fair few years!! Feels like post my ACI all over again!!

Got occupational health appt with my manager, so see what happens then!

Hi Jules,
haven't taken ibuprofen or other meds, this is why the surgeon is confused. I only bruise easily on the knee on one leg yet nowhere else, even when they did the bloods I didn't bruise.
Haven't been back yet since problems started, knee is still swollen and this is 6 weeks post op for athroscopy, so something isn't right but they don't know what. Hopefully will sort itself but who knows.
Let you know how I get on.
Glad you're doing well.

Hi Allan,
Have they sorted you out yet? Have they found out whats going on?

I am now about 2 and half months post PFR, and its still on going well, still in a lot of pain, and even with the TKR leg, the lower part of the leg is very painful on walking. I can walk around the block and then I'm like a crippled old woman the rest of the day!

See my OS in just under 4 weeks to see if he is going to do numer 13 op, for adhesions and the patella tilt inwards on the PFR knee. So watch this space.

Sorry I haven't updated this page for quite a while.

I am just over 8 months right TKR and just over 4 months left knee PFR and was supposed to be going in tomorrow for a lateral release and clearing of adhesions on my left knee, that has been cancelled as my surgeon is ill. Hopefully get a new date for a couple of weeks time, as the patella is still tilting inwards.

I now also have raised insoles for my shoes for my dropped foot arches, which has helped a great deal with the shin pain I have been having on my TKR leg.

All in all I still have some pain in both knees, not like the arthritic pain, more soft tissue pain, the stiffness is still there but goes after about a minute when I start to walk around. I'm having no giving way in the knees any more either, so all in all a lot of improvement from my past suffering. But yet still have a little way to go, which I think after this next surgery and I have built up my muscles I am hopefull it will improve further.

Hope alls well with everyone.

Hi Jules,
they did athroscopy on my left knee which took ages to heal. Still not sorted, worse still my right knee has started doing exactly the same as it did before I had the first ACI on it. Will be in contact with the surgeon again shortly. Hurts like hell when it gives way backwards mind.  Hows yours all going? Will catch up when I know more on mine.

Speak soon

Hi Allan,
I  know exactly how your feeling with the disappointments, its hard when you think that after every surgery you will be fine for a while, but it doesn't work out that way.
I go in on Wed 24th Jan for my lateral release and clearing of adhesions, so I think that should be my last operation for a long time, but only time will tell.
Like I said still having some pain and can't stay on my legs for long periods else I really still suffer the pain for it, but hopefully after this one and when I have built up my muscles things should improve a lot more still.
Wishing the best with your meeting with your surgeon when you see him and hope you too get sorted.
regards
Jules

Hi all,
Had my surgery on Wednesday 24th January, sat in the waiting room from 7:30am to 10am, then sat in another pre op room in my gown until 1pm, then finally went to theatre, had an open lateral release done, it just took under an hour,
so have 8 stitches on the outer side of the knee, so will have another new 5 inch scar along side my long one in the centre of the knee. He also cleared the adhesions above the knee. I was home by 5pm!
Well I'm, amazed hardly any pain with the tablets, without meds I get a severe aching pain on the outer part of the knee, the type of pain where you just don't know where to put your leg! But this only lasted a few days. And walking is pretty good too, not much of a limp either.
So with the meds I hardly feel anything, and the swelling is above and on the outer part of the knee, had loads of fluid in there, all that squelching when I moved and walked, made me cringe! But that gone now. I think the minimum pain has something to do with the fact I have nerve damage from the PFR operation, so didnít get to feel much of it post op.
In fact its so good that I even started on my bike only two days post op, the knee is bending fully as well. I can still feel some catching, but the patella feels in a more comfortable place.
Just have to work on building up the muscles now and concentrate getting back to work.
I had a week and a half where the stitches were really tight and very sore and red, ended up having to have antibiotics for a weeks and they thought there was a possible infection underneath them, and had to keep the stitches in for 19 days in total. This put me back on my exercising, but Iím back on track now though. No more operations for me in a long time ..... I hope!
Well
Hope everyone is well.

Hi all,
Think this will be my last post on here, as I think that now, I've had all that can be done for me at this point. But you can still follow me on follow my TKR and PFR post on the TKR posts page.
I have to rebuild my muscles and aim to return back to work mid to end of May.
Its been a very long journey but at least I have come out at the end.
I wish you all undergoing ACI or any operation on the knees all the best and hope that it works first time for you.
Best wishes
Jules

Hi jules,
hows everything feeling now?

Just out from another athroscopy, this time to look at the ACI, and no suprise but it failed.
Not sure what the next step is.
Try and surf the web for other alternatives then maybe see a differnet specialist, lucky its on insurance.

Hope alls sorted for you
Allan

Hi Allan,
Sorry that your ACI didn't take, its such a blow when you go through all that and it doesn't work!
I think there are not really any choices left now apart from TKR or PKR or PFR?
What did they say they could do for you after they gave you the results of the findings from the scope?

Well I had my TKR right knee May 06 and a PFR left knee Aug 06, still having pain, no arthritic pain on resting at all, as soon as I sit there is no pain whats so ever, which is good, as I'm now managing to get some sleep and my dark cirlces under my eyes and bags are reducing nicely after all the years of sleepless nights!
In the TKR knee the pain is superficial on walking only and doesn't bother me too much, but the PFR knee, I still get some deep degree of pain on walking which is still causing me to limp slightly, I still can't walk very far or for very long and have had to resign from my job as I could not possibly return back to walking on the wards all day.

But infact I am now expecting, so I will stay off work now until baby is born. I am doing a British Sign Language Course and hope by the time I want to return to the working world, I will have my level 3 and be able to be an Interpreter for the deaf and hard of hearing, which would be excellent.

I have also found out that I now have osteoarthritis in the base of my big toes 'halux limitus' and in the base of my thumbs 'basal thumb arthritis' and will have to hve my toes operated on after the baby is born. The pain is intermittent at the moment and very manageable, but over the next year it will get increasingly hard to bend to the big toes to walk. So the operations will continue, and I have no doubt that they will have to probably do a TKR on my left knee in the near future, as the PFR doesn't seemed to have worked totally for me.

Well I hope you come to a decision on your future plans, and I wish you all the best for the future.

Best wishes
Jules
