Ack! Staples for those little arthroscopy incisions? I had only one stitch in each of my incisions, of which there were 2.

All I can tell you is that they have a special staple remover tool to unclamp the staples. I imagine that it probably doesn't hurt much more than getting an injection does. Hopefully others who have been there will chime in!
multiple arthroscopies 2/00,3/01,6/01,1/03, 12/07,10/10. chondromalacia, severe medial joint space narrowing following 3 partial menisectomies, chronic pain problems, kneecap problems, OCD lesion, failed mfx.

Getting my staples out didn't hurt at all--it was almost more itchy than anything else.  At most you feel a little pinch.  Don't worry about it--it really will be a relief, because the incision will feel so much better without that metal in there.

My staples were in my belly, so they were a real pain when they were in.  I was soooo happy they were gone!

Good luck.

Well, I personally didn't think it hurt very much when I had mine removed, but I've had people scream bloody murder when I've taken them out  ::) so it seems to vary from person to person, I guess.

I've never had any pain when getting staples out, I had 44 after my ACL/PLC reconstrution.  They took out half of them at my OS's office and then he wanted the other half to stay in for another week.  Since my mom is a nurse she said she would take the rest out rather than driving an hour to his office.  Well, after the week, I wanted them out ASAP so I could finally take a normal shower.  My mom went to the store and said she would take them out when she got back.  That mad me really mad so I took them out myself.

yep, and the tool is pretty much like a staple remover that you would find in an office supply store. ;D

It doesn't really hurt to take out the staples , sometimes they are stuck down in some drainage or dried blood, and it may pull a little, but if you are busy talking or thinking about something else , you probably won't even feel it. I think everyone dreads it the first time, and then finds out it is really not painful. Teresa

reminds me of a friend who had a hemorrhoid surgery and was told that on the first visit to the restroom "some patients experience some discomfort". He said the pain was so intense that he almost fainted. SOME DISCOMFORT!!
Anyway, getting staples out is not a big deal - can hurt a little but it is usually over pretty quick and is not a deep pain. Often you don't feel much at all.

No, it does not hurt. It may pull a bit, as mentioned above, but it does NOT hurt. Getting staples out and getting stitches out are pretty much the same.

well then why do they call it staples?  Doesn't that mean a metal thing goes into your body then curl up the sides?  Or are they straight sides? :-*

Straight sides ::) Remember that paper-type staples only curve back because they are slammed down against the stapler's bottom lip (no such instrument inside your leg). They go in straight.

Besides the fact that it didn't hurt, the thing that most fascinated me about the staple removal is the WAY they were removed. The nurse used a sort of wire-cutter thingie to clip each one in two, then she simply removed the separated pieces.

After the staples were all gone, the nurse put strips of tape (steri-tape) across the incision. The tape looks like masking tape, and you're supposed to leave it on until it naturally falls off.  Be sure to get a good look at the incision, if you want to see it, before the tape goes on; because the tape pretty much covers it completely, and the tape will be there for several days.

Really, don't worry. It's no sweat!
