old knee injury
« on: August 28, 2004, 10:51:26 PM »
About 6 years ago, I landed on my knee pretty hard while playing hockey, and since then it hasn't been the same.  I cannot fully straighten it, and I've had it drained of fluid several times over the course of 6 years.  My MRI showed no damage to the MCL or ACL, which is why my doctor didn't advise surgery.  Still, I think it may be atrophed or something, because I can't lock it no matter how hard I try.  What should I do?  Are there any exercises that can help even though its been such a long time since the injury?

Find another doctor!  Preferrably one who specializes in knees.  Was this first doctor you saw an orthopedic specialist or a GP?  I've never heard of a doctor believing a negative MRI over prolonged patient issues--at least not a good doctor.

MRI's are far from the Holy Grail.  I've had five, and only once has anything show up...yet I've had five knee surgeries, each time to address serious issues in the knee that never appeared on the MRI.

If you are not able to straighten your leg, it sounds like there is some kind of mechanical blockage--a loose body, torn meniscus, something.

Go up to the "Knee surgeons" link at the top of this page and find one near you.  Or try posting further down in the Struggling with Pain section or one of the other more active knee sections.  You may want to post your location and hope someone here has seen a great doctor near you.

Good luck.
