I've got a 300 mile trip to my home town this w/end and my right knee is the excelator pedal - whoopie!!  (not literally  ;D     ICE ICE ICE

Ron, my friend:

Is there anything I can do to help?  Can I send you the money for your awful and useless visit to that doctor?  I don't have much...but you sure as h*ll didn't need that!

Let me know what I can do, kiddo.  I know you would do the same for any one of us!

Hugs!

Holly

Ron, AM So SORRY, but can't say it surprises me as no treatment from renowned specialist does. I think that maybe somehow, unsuspectingly, you, and I and maybe several others on this site, got chosen to TEST, and see how much we could take until we cracked. BUT THEN I am not sure what happens after that, so maybe that is why we just hang in there. Is there no pain management on your ins.plan? I know the limitations of insurance too well. I made a phone call to every office in the state and two others with no help. If I were to be treated like that,I would not pay out additional money for the privilege. I would find somebody else to see, and at least try it.But, If you have a dr. prescribing percocet, ask him to let  you try oxycontin, and use the percocet for breakthrough.pain.Maybe, you can talk him into at least giving you a months worth, and then see how it goes. IT does take at least a week to see if it will work, and it does make you nauseaus, or at least it has for most I know. Most pain meds take a gradual increaseto handle the side effects. It won't hurt to ask, and maybe things will turn out for the better. Does not sound like a very good pain managment practice, if there are no appts, and they don't understand that waiting is unbearable. MOSt have a built in phone message with somebody always on call 24/7 to answer questions, and refill meds, as the whole idea is for the pt. to be able to depend on that pain team to handle their pain. How did you end up with this dr. anyway, he referral? I know as I head towards another weekend I hope that I can grit my teeth and make it through, which is probably similar to you, and the weather here is to be beautiful. Hope I have the guts to at least make it good for my family and get out and do the things that weekends call for, and get the yard ready for fall, and the Halloween decorations in place. SO my hopes are for the best weekend you can honestly hope for. Teresa

Ron,

If you were so inclined, and were totally and utterly bored with lots of time and an internet connection, you could look up my posts from two years ago.  I hadn't been through the sheer volume of surgeries you had, but I'd done 5 procedures in 10 months and was still worse than when I started.  You have to keep going.  Of course, it's necessary to stop, take a deep breath, rest, and re-evaluate.  But you have to keep pushing in order to find a doctor with the courage to help you.  This one at the HSS obviously wasn't the guy.  So you'll have to move on.  Instead of continuing to rely on your well-intentioned and wonderful GP, I would strongly urge you to go to a pain management specialist.  PM is so much more than the meds.  It's titrating different levels, it's using complementary meds like neurontin and amytriptylline and even tylenol.  It's acupuncture, myo-fascial release, trigger point injections (unpleasant but SOOOOO helpful), and specialized physical therapy.  It's a doctor who understands utterly the domino effect on the rest of your body when your knee is out of whack.  There are sub-specialties within pain management that I think can be very helpful in your case, like Physical Medicine and Rehabilitaion (PM&R).  That's what my PM doctor specializes in, and their sole job is to keep the patient in one piece in the face of chronic musculo-skeletal conditions that orthopedic surgeons can't or won't help.  Their job is to pick up the pieces, and to work hard to achieve a quality of life that the patient was lacking before they heard of PM&R.

So I urge you to keep the PM appointment, but before you pay out the $$ find out what the specialty is of the doctor in question.  An anesthesiologist with a PM background can be helpful, but they don't have the training in human anatomy and musculo-skeletal structures that a PM&R doctor (aka physiatrist) has.  I know the right doctor can get you back to some kind of equilibrium, where things are not getting worse and hopefully getting better.  Your sleep is the top priority, and a PM&R doctor will focus on that first.

Once your situation is stabilized and you're not reeling from exhaustion and collapsing from pain, then you can calmly and rationally start the search for an OS.  Holly has one that is by all accounts a fantastic surgeon--and a courageous one, who took on her case and did a major surgery even though she'd had years of failed treatments.  That's the kind of doctor you need--one who has the courage to try and the knowledge to come up with a plan.  One who won't be scared away by your multiple surgeries.  And if your knee and hip need replacing, this surgeon will do it.  There's no reason to suffer now if there is help.

Finally, a PM doctor with a PM&R background can assess you for autonomic nerve damage.  RSD is often thrown out there when the OS has no idea what to do next.  It may be part of your problem, but if it is not then it's a red herring.  A good PM doctor will usually have a large % of patients who actually do have RSD, and will be able to tell the difference.  About a year ago I saw a 70 year old top OS in Phoenix, a man who gets the complicated referral cases and does the big open surgeries to correct PFS.  This man was a knee specialist and by all accounts a great surgeon with very good diagnostic skills.  He looked at my surgical history (not my knee, mind you) and my x-rays and said "You have to get nerve blocks, I think you have RSD.  Your pain is way out of proportion to the amount of damage I see in the x-ray and MRI.  I've seen much worse cases."  He said I had phantom pain and RSD.  He was so wrong that my PM doctor practically stormed out of my next appointment with her to call the OS and give him a piece of her mind.  What this big, hotshot doctor was really saying was "I don't want to take on your case.  Goodbye."  Fair enough--I don't want him to be my surgeon if he feels that way.

So you've got to look at your most recent appointment in that light, okay?  It's hard, I know.  It's hard to keep getting knocked down and getting back up again.  But it is necessary.  You can't keep going on pecocet prescribed by a well-meaning GP and 2 hours of sleep a day.  Certainly your GP should be applauded for having the courage to help you where no one else has.  But unless he has specialized training in pain management, you would be better off seeing someone else who is better equipped to help.  Percocet, like Teresa said, is ideal for breakthrough pain, but it is not the best choice for primary medication for chronic, long-term issues.  Oxycontin is.  BTW, Oxycontin is just percocet in a different formulation, intended for slow release.  So it's not really that you would be changing meds, just the forumulations.  Once the worst of the pain is under control, and you can sleep again, your life will get better.  I promise.  So you have to be strong for just a little while longer, long enough to find a PM doctor who has a physical medicine and rehabilitation background.

Heather

Ron,

I can't believe you had to deal with that at HSS! I know what you mean about the x-ray dept there though. I only had x-rays there once and it wasn't anywhere near as long as you had to wait but I did wait close to an hour...and there were only 4 or 5 people ahead of me. It is also terrible that the PM dept there doesn't accept insurance. I've been told that they are wonderful but the amount of money that they charge is ridiculous! When my old OS recommended me to a PM doctor he told me that they are really great there but due to the fact that I didn't want to have to drive an hour and a half into the city everytime I had a PM appt and they didn't accept my insurance, I went to a doc who's alot closer to me and he's great. Why pay all that money when I can just pay a $12 copay each visit, you know? You just have to do some research and maybe talk to your local docs and see who they recommend because I think right now a good PM doctor is really important for you. I'd recommend mine but I don't think you want to drive out to Long Island (Smithtown) for appts. Anyway, you take care of yourself and just keep pushing and you'll find a good OS who can help you as well as a good PM doc who can hopefully get you some relief from the pain so you can at least get some more sleep which is so important.

(((Hugs)))

Nettan!

You are an inspiration to all of us!  I love reading your posts- you are so full of life and fun!  You can take any bad situation and turn it into something funny!  You are truly a wonderful person!

Ron!

I hope you're feeling better!  Instead of shelling out $450 for bad medical advice, you should spend it at a day spa!  You need a massage!  Aromatherapy!  Get a wrap!  You will probably feel much better doing that instead!  And you'll still have a couple bucks left for cocktails!

Many hugs to you both!

Chris :)

Hey Ron, YOU know sometimes I start out reading posts by those of us that are ranting and raving, and temporarily feeling sorry for ourselves, but somewhere in the posts I will find a thread or word, or even a wish for somebody else that lets me know WE ALL ARE STILL HANGING IN THERE AND THINKING OF OTHERS LETS US FEEL BETTER OURSELVES> IF I would find one that didn't have some sprinkle of hope, or even disgust for all the crap we put up with, that lets us laugh, I would really worry. How was the weekend? Teresa

Rock-Star Ron!

I am glad to hear you had a good weekend- sounds like you were quite the wild man, on stage and all!  Go ahead and get a massage- you need to be good to yourself!  I'm still suffering the insomnia with you- it's no longer pain- I just can't seem to fall asleep!  There is no cure.  I stopped taking naps, but that didn't help, either!  When I do find the elusive cure to sleep, I will let you know!

Post by: Teresa_S on September 28, 2004, 09:11:15 PM
Ron, I am definitely with you on wishing for that five hour stretch. I thought I might have been headed that way on Saturday, BUT my son, called be starting at 2:00 am and one of his friends, that I have known since birth, had broken his collar bone, and couldn't move. I asked FIRST how much they had been drinking, and if anyone could drive safely. HE assured me there were plenty of those, THOUGH I DOUBTED IT> Anyway, I got out of bed, and made an ice pack, and waited, he called again around 2:40 or so, and said they were on their way, and arrived around 3. THEY all four had open beers, including the driver. (he had just gotten out of a 4 year stint with the marines a few months ago.)  Anyway, Nick, theone  injured, had his head turned so far towards the left he was facing backwards, and the bone had been broken from the back, and the could not move because of the intense spasms. HE is a construction worker, and has these big muscles that really spasmed. ANYWAY, I applied the ice pack and told them maybe I should drive , or call his mom, and he said no, he wanted me to look at it, and make all decisions. I finally sent them on their way and threatened all of them that only the driver should go in, and ask the er to have somebody get him our of the truck, and the rest stay OUT of the ER waiting room, as there is nothing a ER likes less than a waiting bunch of drunks. I guess from reports, they put on a collar, and put him on  a stretecher, causing lots of pain, and Nick, managed to walk out at least once, MY son called again about 30 minutes after they left here, to say "MOM< its been hours and hours and we haven't heard anything" I told him 30 minutes, and for all of them to go home, if Nicks finanacee was there. Found \out the next day the ER did put on the splint but gave him nothing for pain, as some ER docs really do like to punish people who drink. WEll, all in all I got to sleep from abou 5:30 until 7 am. Life never fails to come up with some new diaster. Teresa

Are you wearing a big bull's eye?  What is up with chicks knocking you over?!  Someone needs to raise the Homeland Security alert level, as there are crazed women running around Grand Central Station!  Maybe they are just trying to "mack" on you, in a weird NYC way.  Not recalling THAT method to pick up a man from S*x and the City, but maybe it is some new trend.  "Target your victim.  Approach and tackle."  He he he...  Anywho, I am glad to hear you are intact and relatively unscathed!  All is well in the subway-free world of Florida.  Am currently sitting on porch drinking rum and Diet Coke.  Take care of yourself, and watch out for the crazy women!

Many hugs,
Chris  :)

I agree with Chris, Thought  maybe somebody pinned one of those "kick me" or "knock me down, in this case" signs on the back of you>'' I think you have taken more hits than some of the people in Florida or along the coast.Think you better invest in one of those big orange , glow in the dark vests that says; BEWARE.I can only imagain the increase soreness, pain, etc if I were knocked down, and LORD knows I am  know sure I could get up. MY one year old grandson was playing on the floor, so I got my self down in a sidelying type position, supported by my hands, and he started circling , grunting, groaning, and making all these weird noises trying to get in the same position. Did not know I had taught him all those sound effects. PATHETIC. Bet I would let loose a string of words if I were knocked down. Keep in touch, stay in an upright position, and hope the doc can help  you. Teresa

Hey Ron:

Again, my offer stands to come over the GW Bridge and smack a couple of these chicks upside the head if they can't quit hurting you!!! (he-he-he!)  Well, that would be a pretty sight, right?  As I've said, I'm not that big, but I'm feisty as h*ll, and I'd do anything to help a friend.  Besides, I've got these here 2 crutches that are bored just lugging me around...they might want to do battle for you!  Speaking of crutches, don't forget my suggestion that you use AT LEAST ONE when negotiating your way around public transit just to serve as a VISUAL WARNING to others to BACK OFF!  Otherwise, the orange cone suggestion is not bad, but a bit cumbersome! ;D  I swear, man, you've been knocked down so often I think you should start carrying some chalk around with you to draw your own outline for when you fall down! (just kidding...you know I love you!).

Can't believe you're still not sleeping...I'm pretty sure it's against even the Geneva Convention to allow someone to go that long without sleep.  And you're still working ludicrous hours too.  PLEASE TRY TO TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF WHEN YOU CAN!  Get a massage, let someone come over and cook for you...something, my friend!  Do you have an old girlfriend or an old girl "friend" who could come over and just let you cuddle with her so you can fall asleep in someone's warm embrace?  I'm not being silly or suggestive here...I know that when my husband is completely stressed out the only thing that works to calm him is my "magic skin" (well, that's what he calls it), and holding him until he falls asleep is the only thing that gives him peace.  If I were an old girlfriend of yours, I know I'd do it for you - you're just too great a guy to be suffering like this!

Hope you have a better day...sending lots of hugs!

Holly

Ron,

You really need to figure a way to "break-in" to the climate control box, and restore AC!  Or, you can open your freezer and stick a fan in front of it!  I'm sorry to hear you are having a bad pain day!  This calls for ice cream!  Since you have no AC, it will cool you down.  Have a great weekend, and hope you feel better soon!

Millions of "icy-cold" hugs (since warm would not be appropriate while you are in your little sweat-box!)

Dear Ron:

I've heard that it actually makes you feel cooler to drink HOT beverages...for some reason.  Beats me.  Myself, I'd rather be slurping up cold appletini's to the point where I don't even NOTICE that the A/C is off!

Try lying in a shallow tub of tepid water (NOT COLD...BAD FOR YOUR HIP!!), sipping the beverage of your choice, and listening to some great reggae.  Maybe you could even drift off for a snooze (DON'T DROWN!!!  I'D HAVE TO KILL YOU IF YOU DID THAT!!!)

Please feel better, sweetie.  Hugs!

It's awful when desperately needing something and you can't get it like something to cool down. By the way I have weatherscope on my computer and there I can see it's - 48 celsius degrees today in Antarktis !!!
Hope you feel better soon and I agree with the others, got about 4 pair of crutches at home so I can join the battle against the people who runs you down.
I hope you get a nice weekend though your pain.
HEY MAN SUN STILL SHINES ON ME !!!  8)

Hey Ron!

I just read Nettan's post about getting all us "gimp-stick" ladies together and forming an army for your protection...can't you just see it?  I had a good laugh picturing all of us running (O.K., limping) interference for you as you battle your way through the NYC public transit system! Sort of like a kneegeeks version of a presidential motorcade, right?

Enjoy the football, honey, and I hope today is a good pain-free one for you!

Hugs!

Holly

Hey Man !!!

Ron, if you do your best why should you loose your job ?
Have you ever told everyone at work how you have it ?
Maybe it's time for that if you haven't. Was the football good to watch ? Well I ended up in a cookcompetitionjury 2 days ago, saturday, after have put a not on friday which team should win then.
Me and my friend were called in and sat down eating 2 (!) dinners and making notes about how they prepared the food and so on. Was funny and tasted good also.
I hope you feel better today. You know I wish I were that orthopeadic surgeon I wanted and still want to be so I could help you out.
HEY MAN SUN STILL SHINES ON ME !!! 8)
How long are you going to be on crutches ?
Sending lots of hugs and sunny smiles as always.

Hi Guys

I like this Ronnie's Raiders idea  ;D

Ron, I'm glad we've made you smile - It's good that driving is helping too, it stops those railroading women on the subway  (and also lessens the pain slightly too, I hope).

Ok Beth  signing off

Ron, I would have bet that those two colors are the two any of us would have picked!!Unfortunately, I have had way too much experience with black and blue as have you and everyone else on this site. Go for the bright colors, and we'll cover the black and blue. Teresa

How about that bright red our bruises get when they burst and maybe the deep purple right before? The black and blue will definately be covered.. and probably every possible injury known to man.

Ron, Maybe you could put those who have so much energy they keep running into, knocking down, etc to work being the cheerleaders!! God knows now of us can INTENTIONALLY do flips, somersaults, and cartwheels. MORE like flops, trips, and backwardrolls. Can't imagine us as the dance team or entertainment, unless an audience appreciates braces, crutches, canes, and walkers. PICTURE US> should be good to have a laugh and forget pain for a minute. Hey Ron:

Well, my "pom-poms" may not be what they were in High School...but I'd still be happy to shake them for the team! (he-he-he!).  I'm all for black and blue uniforms - so slimming! ;D Of course, on us they'd be like cammoflage since that's what we look like all the time anyway, right?

RONNIE'S RAIDERS RULE!!!

My surgery is set for a week from tomorrow.  Still haven't received a penny from Disability and funds are getting kind of low...but hey it's only money.  Other things in life are just too good to complain right now...loving the Fall weather, my husband's feeling better, been buying lots of baby things for my grandaughter-to-be in January (Julia Rose).  Just wish me luck for next week and I'm good to go!

Hugs!

Holly

Hey Man !!

About your Raiders, my family is very musical maybe they can stand for that, I mean we must have some music !! How about guitar, flute, accordion and saxophone ?!
How are you doing by the way ? How goes the driving ?
I wish I could get my drivinglicense back pretty soon, but the state here is not moving so fast it's like having chewing gum under the feet !!
HEY MAN SUN STILL SHINES ON ME !!  8)
Though I'm continueing my bracelife as my country nowadays are very cold and windy but beautiful with all leaves in different colours. My cold in the knee is ok again so I'm back at work.
Well, have a nice eve. hope we can catch each other some day and have a chat.

Hugs and sunny smiles Nettan  ::)

Ps. How about BLUE and YELLOW the colours of my flag ?!
