Title: Should I be running?

I'm waiting to see a knee specialist next Tuesday. According to an MRI, I've damaged my MCL (grade 3) and completely torn the dreaded ACL. It's looking like reconstructive surgery is on the cards (although I've heard differing views as to whether the ACL is completely torn or not

My question is, I'm going to the gym a couple of times between now and seeing this guy to try and build up the quad muscles, but is running a big no no? It feels okay, so I've done it in the past but am I risking doing more damage? I'm planning a lot of cycling as I've heard this is great for tightening up the MCL's, but I would ideally like some more intense exercise, but would you advise it at the risk of making matters worse?

I would NOT run on an ACL-deficient knee  :o You might end up tearing other structures such as a meniscus and even re-injure your MCL.

To put it another way: I could not even walk normally after completely tearing my ACL. There was so much instability in the joing that the tibia moving against the femur would cause 2-3 day inflammation flares.

Some people react differently of course. But if I were you I would stick to cycling, walking and lifting weights until your MCL fully heals and you get your ACL reconstructed.

I'm with Gab!! I have ran in the past but i find slowing down and stopping hard ( i end up hopping down the road on my other leg till i come to a stop) This and accidentaly puting your leg in a hole could cause you knee to give way and wipe out (In my experience, which is why i run in evening to save embarresment  :-[) causing more damage to other structures. Cycling is a great form of exercise, which should be sufficent until LR.

Hold off on the running until you have a definitive diagnosis.  Keep your activities low impact, such as swimming or using an elipitical trainer.

I have to agree with post from AT soccergirl........
Avoid running with the injury you have as you may inadvertantly cause laxity (looseness!) in the other ligaments as they try and compensate for your torn ACL and mcl damage...
In addition to this you might injure yourself far more if your leg gave way at running speed/pothole etc.....

Your best off building your quads up and doing low impact stuff.........
