Title: Failed lateral release surgery
Post by: Might on June 27, 2019, 02:08:31 AM
Hello everyone on this site, I am brand new to this. So my topic will be about the lateral retinaculum release surgery. I had it back in May of 2013 for a arthritic damage done to my patella from squats in the weight room. For several years it didn't bother me and to be honest at the time of surgery I didn't even know what a lateral retinaculum was. I only thought loose hanging cartilage was going to be scrapped away. About a year ago my knee started hurting again. I am currently undergoing regenexx treatment to regenerate the cartilage in my knee at Beacon Orthopedics. I underwent two rounds of platelet rich plasma and on of amniofix. I am a little over two months in and the results haven't shown yet but they seem promising. I am a long distance runner and there is a good chance of regeneration but it just takes a few years. I should be back running in september.

As for the lateral retinaculum, the doctor who did my regenexx treatment keeps insisting that there is no way to reattach the severed ends. I joined this website because I saw some people talking about a lateral release reattachment and one person said they had it done. I didn't see any clear answers as too if these individuals got it/worked successfully. As great as this regenexx procedure is I want my lateral retinaculum reattached even if its not perfect again. I understand nerve damage would still be there an would have a scar. I was horrified as to what they did and blame my own ignorance back at the time.

Mark Sanders in Texas has done experience of doing surgery to resolve instability caused by failed LRs I believe, donít know the details. Might be worth a conversation

Thanks for info, I wonder why my doctors in Cincinnati Ohio/ northern kentucky area keep saying nothing can be done. Have you heard of anyone getting a lateral release reversal/sewn together? Also what is your knee condition?

My knee is arthritic. No lateral release. Also, Iím not in the US so canít soeak to what surgeons local to you might think. Maybe they donít fully recognise the very limited indications where LR is likely to be useful?

Youíll need to find a patellofemoral specialist ideally. Thereís a list of surgeons with specific interests in the primer area in the learning portfolio

One poster on here fairly recently had botched lateral releases operated on, but travelled from the US to Europe for surgery

Good luck
