Title: What kind of work do you do?
Post by: FieryMayhem on April 21, 2004, 09:44:14 PM
Not sure if this has been asked before, but here goes... This may sound odd, and it may not, but I'm curious what kind of jobs everyone has.  I know some are extremely limited by their knee problems and some are a bit luckier and aren't as limited.  So, what does everyone do?  (part-time, full-time, etc.)

Aside from being a full-time college student, I work at a comic book shop doing web/internet work for our online store.  It's nice because I work from home on my computer and I set my own hours (which is extremely helpeful when some days are more painful than others).

I'm a full-time college student and a bank teller.  The bank kills my knee when I can't sit (and when I can't sit I'm usually having to lift heavy coin boxes).

I'm a certified athletic trainer and I work at a D3 College, as an assisstant trainer and professer of athletic training.  I have also been working with our team physicians as a physician extender.  This summer I am going to be working with the St. Louis Ram's training camp.

My knee does make it hard, especially during two a day football practices, when I'm constantly on my feet from 6am until 10pm.

I am a Greenkeeper that basically involves maintaining a Golf Course, that involves lots of manual work, so can be on your feet all day. Not always sitting a ride on mower as many people seem to think we do every day.

I find my knees and recently hips cause probloms but try to work the best I can at a slower pace. Some days I can work without much knee pain while other days its worse.

I would love to work on another Golf Course but cannot untill knees are sorted and can run once again, Nick  :){2004}:)

hi

I am a pediatric nurse practitioner...I am working 20 hours a week right now until after my knee surgery in June...I hope to return to fulltime status after that...I am on my feet constantly except when attempting to get a throat swab from a stubborn child (teeth clenched and spitting)...otherwise I run from room to room with a smile on my face dragging my leg behind me...they call me "peg leg".

Of course with only 65 degrees of bending at the moment it meant NO flying at all. I am only allowed to fly again when I reach 120 degrees at least. I am starting to get really bored!

I was trained as a high school teacher (spanish).  Was laid off and very unhappy about that.  However, since my knee problem I realise that it was probably a blessing in disguise because the building had too many stairs, and the pressure was too much.  Now I'm a stay-at-home mum and much happier.  I'll find some way of using my talents.  Maybe tutoring...a professional tutor and be able to make my own hours.  Sounds like a plan ;D

High School teacher - was head of Geology and Geography in the UK as well as second in the Phys Ed department. Introduced and ran the IT side of the school which was probably my undoing in the end. Worked for 20 years in an inner city comprehensive before burning out and getting early retirement. Now a mixture of High School English, French, Sport, translation work, ski teaching and anything else that is fun, legal and will help pay the bills. Teaching in southern Germany so that I'm near my beloved Alps!

I'm an elementary school teacher (full-time). I teach French and Physical Education (yes, I still teach gym, believe it or not, lol). Last year (before my injury) I was able to run around with the kids.  This year I'm more limited because I cannot run or bend my knee past 93 degrees (it's slowly improving).  So I participate as much as I can, but I also have older students help me demonstrate. I LOVE my job!! I know by the next school year ('08-'09) I will be back to normal (well, almost :)). I actually returned to work less than 2 weeks after my surgery. I was on crutches (at work) for 4 weeks and then had a can for another few weeks.  I also started the school year on a cane.  Luckily my school is only one level, I have a very supportive principal and co-workers, and all of my students are extremely helpful (even the kindergarten students I sometimes teach), offering to carry things for me, asking me on a daily basis if I'm feeling better, etc.

I hope to be able to run again by the spring :)

Hi Everbody........

I found this site, by chance a few months back when i was researching my pending TKR, which was due this coming spring, however 3 weeks prior chrstmas I was offered admission over the christmas periold, after much discussion i thankfully took the opertunity to get it sorted, as I am only a fit (Thankfully) 48 year old I have a young family and they were very surportive...christmas was delayed in our house hold.
Back to the questiion in hand, I have been a groundsman for the past 27 years, with my present empolyer 25 yrs, I work for my local parish council , whom thankfully are a very good empolyer.
I look after all types of sports surfaces and any areas owened by the parish council.

Hi there,

Welcome to bulletin board I see that you are a groundsman and been one for a long time. The reason I replied back to your post is because I am a full time Greenkeeper and this year will be my 10th year on the same golf course that I worked at all my working ilfe so far. I use to work at my local cricket club with the Groundsman and helped prepair the wickets for play as part of my work experience that was part of my ND in Greenkeeing that took me 2 years to complete.

I never seen a member on this board thats in similar line of work as mine and will know how physical the job is at times and helps to have healthy knees. TKO? dont you mean TKR as I never heard of a TKO and would like to know what is it stands for as its a new to me and been a member of the board for over 5 years.

Are you a member of IOG as I use to be while I was a student at college, I am now a member of BIGGA an association for greenkeepers and get a monthly magazine and can play in BIGGA golf matches.

I am glad your surgery went well and hope you recover soon so you can go back to work again.

Nick :) {2008} :)

Hi, I'm a psychiatric nurse at a forensic rehab. unit down here in south west England. Currently on long term sick leave after a TPF during an incident on the ward. I used to be a graphic artist so I'm painting and drawing to pass the time.

3 months post-op and progress back to full rom is sooooo slooowww...

Best wishes, Dave ;)

I work as an associate scientist and make floor finishes, cleaners, and strippers.  I keep people from slipping on the floors and ruining their knees! :)

I am glad i took the time to be considerate..... you know, what you do comes back to you! I also believe that laughter is the best medicine! :)

Thank you to all those who have posted details on this thread.

I am a RN in a Cardiac Cath Lab.  I work fulltime and do 10 hour days. My job involves standing in theatre with an added approx 8kg of weight in protective lead on.  Basically my job is one that requires me to be on my feet most of the day, either standing, walking or running in emergencies.   I am now 5 weeks post op and really wonder when I can return to work, and in what capacity.  I have been off work for 7 weeks so far.  I have found sitting idol my greatest challenge.  It is not in my nature to be this way.

If anyone out there is a RN and has returned to work I would be really interested in how you managed. I really enjoy my job and look forward to returning to work.  However I wonder if the health of my knee will suffer because of the nature of the job.  I would appreciate any thoughts.

Cheers, Ali.

Hi there,

I work in psychiatry and mental health and sometimes I feel more like a patient than a worker as these knees really mess with your head!!

Natalie.

Very interesting reading about what everyone does.

I'm a librarian of the geeky modern variety, which is to say that I don't actually have anything to do with books in my job. I manage British Columbia's provincewide virtual reference service, which offers live online reference assistance to library patrons across the province. Thankfully it doesn't place any particular demands on my knee, and I was able to work from home for a couple of weeks following my knee injury. My biggest difficulty now (8 weeks post-injury) is that I spend a lot of time in meetings and at my desk, and I find that the knee still stiffens up and gets sore if I sit still for too long. My coworkers are getting used to the fact that periodically they're going to find me sitting on my office floor doing quad sets during my coffee breaks.

I'm a Data Manager but I prefer the title Data Goddess.  I know what you mean about stiffening up while sitting in meetings.  My coworkers have gotten used to me doing ankle pumps and leg extensions during meetings.

Im just about to go in to my 3rd year at uni studying English with education.  I also have a stall at Portobello Road (famous antique market in London) where I sell vintage silver jewellery.  I decided to have my op when I did because it would fit in with uni and my present job (I make up the rules)!  So am pleased how it's all worked out  ;D

I am a registered nurse in Kentucky. I was working in the ER before my knee got really bad. I had to switch to a desk job in 2008 due to the pain and surgery.
I currently review charts for Quality/Risk issues. Lots of sitting. Occasional walking on the units.

I am a stay at home mum in Western Australia to two boys - 2yrs and 7yrs. My husband manages a large iron ore port and travels a lot for work so I'm glad I can be there for my children (if I worked it would be challenging and they would have to spend lots of time in care)

Before I had my children I managed a very large day care centre (children 6wks to 5yrs open 0630 to 1830)
