Title: Concerned - bone bruising
Post by: Mischiefmanaged on February 11, 2015, 06:43:58 AM
Hi all.

Hopefully, I have posted this in the right place. I apologise for the long-winded story.

About 4.5 weeks ago (Saturday) I slipped on a wet floor at work and landed on my left knee. The floor is tiled but basically equivalent to concrete! Strangely it only hurt minimally for the first few days. I was stupid and didn't ice it or anything straight away. I kept walking on it until the next Saturday when I got sent home from work because of the pain. I was sent to the doctor on the Monday and he sent me to get X-rays. On the Thursday he told me there were no fractures and sent me to physio.

Since then I've had 6 physio sessions and have continued to work about 30 hours every week (I work in retail so am on my feet for hours at a time - the doctor has instructed me to take a 5 minute break every half an hour).  Physio has strapped it regularly and I've walked in the pool about 2-3 times a week. Unfortunately my skin has reacted badly to the tape so I can't strap it at the moment. The physio believes I have bone bruising yet I have not been sent for an MRI yet (doctor said if it's not better by next week he will consider it though physio reckons it won't show anything we don't already know).

When I am not at work, I'm resting it most of the time, I am taking anti inflammatories constantly and paracetamol as well. When I'm resting it doesn't hurt so much but as soon as I walk it really hurts still. Work is a living hell. I can't straighten it properly (without being in excruciating pain).

I just think I'm being a wimp but I am concerned that it doesn't seem to be getting any better - every time I go to the physio the swelling has moved (it goes from the front to the back and then back to the front). It's hard to tell how swollen it really is as I have really fat legs to begin with. But I did notice it swell a lot after work last week.

Physio doesn't think it will be a long term problem as I'm young and it's my first injury but I'm so concerned that it's not healing. :( and from what I've read bone bruising can take ages to heal. :(

Should I be requesting an MRI (I'm so afraid it's going to show nothing and then everyone will think I'm faking it)? What other things might help apart from rest, ice, the pool and strapping (when my skin cooperates)? How long should I expect for it to heal? Physio said 2 weeks about 4 weeks ago and now he has said 2-3 but it's not getting better (or it is extremely slowly).

I'm so frustrated. :(

Bone bruises can take a long time to heal. Like months. And they can be terribly painful. PLus, there's not a ton you can do in terms of at home rememdies. Rest, ice, etc. Give it time, basically.
