Title: Really scared. Please advise...
Post by: miltonia on January 22, 2004, 05:10:12 PM
I am 31 with two small kids. I am overweight, but have exercised regularly (3-5 times a week) with very brisk wlking or on stairmaster, elliptical trainer, etc for 7 years. Last week, I noticed a crackling sound coming from my right knee when going upstairs. No real pain, but now, a week later, I think there is a dull ache. Also the crackling happens when I extend my leg. Today, I bent over to wipe something up and my left knee--which is making no sound--had a distinct starin/bruised feel. I have an appt. with an orthopod in 2 weeks. I went to a chiropractor who ordered an xray of my right knee. He said the results showed a normal knee. I am most scared of having osteoarthritis. Will an xray show OA? What the heck is happening? I lost 100 lbs., 7 years ago and have maintained it (though I still need to lose 65 more) through lots of exercise. If my knees go bad, I will be screwed. I am so scared.

Hey !!

A normal x-ray doesn't have to show a normal knee. Even an MRI isn't always realible. But don't think the worse. You soon have the appointment with the orthoped so take it easy until then and I'm sure you will be ok. The docs are soo good today so I don't think you have to be scared. Sometimes knees can feel like this without an injury or OA. But I'm no doc so I can't say if something's wrong or not. Wish you luck.
Let me know how your appoinment was.

hey miltonia, welcome to the board.  First I will say what so many specialists will say right off... noise from the knee doesnt' necesarily mean something is wrong. Lot's of knees made noises and never cause pain.  However, I think I know the sound you are hearing, sounds like a plastic bag your knee? I used to get that noise alot..when I was younger.  I can't tell ya what it is.  Xrays are only as good as the tech that takes em and the people that read em.   ::) HOwever, osteo arthritis should show up on an xray, I would think.  It could be any number of things, and no one here is qualified to diagnose.  Just hang in there til you see the orthopedic guy.  You can check out the steps to enlightenment on the mail page here, there are alot of helpful explanations and self tests.
Take care goodluck
