Title: How can I relax my tensed up muscles during examination!
Post by: Clarkey on February 23, 2013, 05:42:51 PM
Hi All,

This may sound like a bizarre post to be posting on KG and may be able to give me some advice and tips as I always have problems to relax when I am have my knees examined as I always tense right up and cannot seem to help doing this and then cannot be examined properly.

I try my best to relax my muscle and go floppy and cannot seem to grasp how to do this any tips on how I can overcome this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,

As I said before this is an unusual post and just like to know if anyone has got any tips on how to relax my muscles while having my knees examined as I cannot seem to help getting tensed up that then makes it awkward when my PT or OS examines my knee as they cannot then do a proper assessment.

Possibly try looking away or closing your eyes before the doctor touches the leg/knee for exam. Itís a mind over matter thing. Iíd think If you canít see the doctor moving your leg one way or another you wonít have as quick of a protective reactionÖ Looking away is sort of my go to move if the doc keeps telling me to relax.

I suppose there is always the choice of having a few drinks before going in to the appointment too!  ;D j/k

What Ally said ^^^. Definitely try looking away and see if that helps. And LOL @ having a few drinks prior  ;)

Probably the best class I had in college was a Phy Ed that included progressive relaxation.  The technique was to practice tensing muscles and then slowly and consciously relax them-almost like doing an isometric exercise in reverse.  To make it work you need to take a moment to experience, really feel the muscle tension accept it and then try to mentally grab it and move it to another place-from your knee to your calf to your ankle and off the tip of your toe.  It takes practice, but it truly does work.  I can release a tension headache and focus away the pain of a cortisone shot, so with practice, hopefully you can let go of the knee tension.  Part of it is to become familiar with the tensing muscle feeling (or pain) and knowing you can release it at will.  My rheumatologist kids me about going to my happy place, but it works.  I hope it works for you.

Hi All,

Thanks for giving me advice on how to relax tensed up muscles and what I found helpful last time I saw my Sport Medicine Doctor was looking away and chatting the physio at the same time and then suddenly relaxed and was able to examine my knee movements properly.

Not sure due to having mild Autism known as Asperger syndrome that I am more inclined to get tensed up during examination as I cannot stop myself tensing up as soon as someone touches my knee.

Nick, I don't think it is an autism issue.

When you have been through the mill with your knee it is a common response to protect it from any more abuse or misuse.

Distraction is a great technique and you did it perfectly.   :D

I can't say anything of use other than I do exactly the same... It's been tense for so long I'm not sure i can relax it anymore!

Liking the few drinks first suggestion... Shame it's in jest  ;)

OMG I do the EXACT same thing.  I have to put a pillow over my head sometimes.  Mine is usually because my knee will make a loud crack and I dont want to hear it anymore!  I'm trying the drinks next time...

Hi All,

Glad I am not the only one with this problem and hope I can relax on Wednesday when I see a new PT for my latest knee injury and seem to be jinxed with re injuring my right knee all the time.
