You may want to search/research medial plication or imbrication or reefing. Basically what you describe is known as an mpfl repair vs reconstruction.

Do they heal on their own? Only time could tell you that. They are known to heal, but stretched out. Some respond well with physical therapy to strengthen the muscles surrounding. But as a repeat dislocator, the odds are honestly not in your favor. Whether you want to try conservative treatment first is up to you. If you do have bone fragments floating around, they’d likely need to come out…
