Post by: Oreos on April 10, 2012, 04:01:03 AM
Connected to my story a few days ago that i posted, i still have not gotten better and im icing my knee and elevating it. While i am doing this, i am noticing that my knee hurts so much when it is being iced. My knee is still swollen,  i am constantly limping, i am still having much much pain, and i still can not straighten or bend my knee. Any advice?
Thankss!!

When are you seeing the doctor?  Sounds like it certainly should be asap this week :)

You said before that you don't like painkillers, but it would perhaps be an idea to try an anti-inflammatory (like Advil, I am assuming you are in the US) to help with both the pain and swelling.  Make sure you follow the instructions on the packet and always eat with the pills

Does your knee hurt due to the ice or due to the position of the knee - lie on the couch, with back and leg supported (under calf, ankle) - always make sure the icepack is wrapped in a cloth, never directly against the skin.  And avoid doing any sort of activity that hurts the knee

Good luck :)

If icing is hurting then I would say STOP icing for the time being. It might be that you're icing too much or its the position of the knee as Vicks said. It might also be that the nerves are being affected by the ice. Keep elevating. Do you have any other symptoms along with the pain and swelling (heat, colour change, sensitivity etc?)

You need to see the doc asap. I know you've said this is just a sprain and yes it may well be, but you need some input as to the best way forwards now. we can't really do that on the internet!

Good luck

Lottie

Vickster: It is  also because of the position but it was also because of the ice. I am going this week, finally, but i dont know which doctor to go to. Any advice?

Lottie: Kind of colour change it is red in some spots - in the spots that hurt the most. Sometimes my dad would pet it kind of and lay his hand on my knee without recognizing it and it would hurt really bad, what do you mean by sensitivity? and by heat?
Thanks!!

What country are you in?  The types of doctor vary from country to country.  Most on here see an orthopaedist - in the UK, these guys are all surgeons, but I think in the US there are some who don't operate?  Otherwise a Sports Physician (in the UK, these are usually GPs who specialise in sports injuries).  Otherwise, ask your Primary Care doctor (GP) for a recommendation

How long are you icing for - a max of 15 minutes, 4-5 x a day should suffice and you are wrapping the ice pack in a cloth aren't you...what are you using, ice pack, bag of peas?

Ref the exercises from the other thread - personally I think it would be unwise to do anything until you have seen a doctor and know what is actually wrong.  Then you should see a physiotherapist for advice, not go on what you are told or read on the Internet  :)

Hi!

Lottie will agree with me here  ;) that out-of-proportion sensitivity and pain to touch, pain on icing, and colour changes with sensitive patches could possibly indicate an underlying issue - best to get it checked straight away and mention all the symptoms you've had when you see your doc (write them all down or you'll forget a couple!).

No call for panic, and as others have said, we can't diagnose you here (lol, that would definitely NOT be helpful  ;D). Agree with Vickster and Lottie, no exercises until you've seen a doc, and I would personally lay off the ice if it is hurting to use it - that's normally a good sign that your body is not keen for some reason! Rest and elevate, but gently move that knee every now and then, try to avoid sitting with it still for extended periods as that can (ironically) cause pain from stiffness etc.... ::)

Good luck and let us know how you get on...

Vickster: I am in the U.S
That day, i was planning to ice it for 15 minutes but it started hurting the first 10 minutes of icing it.
I was using a gel ice pack and a paper towel between the pack and my skin.
Thanks Vickster!

Brams: Ok thanks for the advice!!

Ill let you guys know whats going on. (:

Paper towel is a bit thin, no?  Better to use a linen teatowel, double over or a hand towel.  I expect the pain is either due to that or as before, the position of the leg

Paper towel???? No use!! Ice + paper = soggy mess. Ice directly on skin is BAD. Use a proper towel if you're going to carry on icing. Personally I'd lay off it for a while, your skin and nerves are probably battered if you've had a gel pack and paper towel on it!
