Title: is this normal recovery
Post by: ddavid on October 04, 2011, 08:47:22 PM
JHi All,

First thanks to anyone whom has a chance to answer.

At 3mos 2 weeks post op mpfl, meniscus tear, debridement.............

I am finally walking normal with a light donjoy brace at work and other activities...........and at home, no brace..........still slow and deliberate gait...have a limp problem but trying to overcome this .....still doing PT.

Quad still weak but better.

Anyway, my question to those more advanced than me (even with different procedures).......is the recovery process just noticing little things?

Like at work...........I hadnt seen a fellow employee for a couple of weeks and they said, you look like your walking better.

Or, a month ago, I would never go without something on my knee but now at home, I do not wear anything and have a more confident stride albeit slow.

My knee feels great one hour and a little tighter and alien the next.......

Little things that I pray are recovery are just that.......so little and you say to yourself, this is slightly better than 4 weeks ago.

Do most of you all that have had surgery and recovered ...........had these thoughts??

I am 45 so I dont heal like you 20 somethings-))

Thanks much, David.

David,

I'm not entirely in the same situation as yourself as I have not had an operation but I was in cast for 8 weeks after rupturing my ACL, MCL and tearing my meniscus.  My MCL has healed to a grade 1 tear but I still have bucket handle tear in my meniscus and no ACL.  I have been going to PT for about the last 10/12 weeks.  I could not move my knee after I came out of cast and if I caught it wrong it would make me feel sick and faint due to the pain.  My PT said I really needed to concentrate on the little things and like you the only way you can do this is to see what you could do last week compared to this week.  I have had some real lows but have battled on and am now walking well and also running my dog at agility which I was not sure I would be able to do again.

It sounds like you are doing really well.  Keep looking back to see how far you've come as it does help.  My PT suggested keeping a diary to see how things had changed.  Sometimes you don't realise the little things until several weeks later and by then they have added up to bigger breakthroughs.

I am in my late 30's so not a 20 something either.  Although not in the same position as yourself I hope this gives you hope to keep up with the PT, it really does work.
