Title: How Long Until I Can Drive After Surgery?
Post by: tennisgirl94 on August 15, 2011, 12:23:44 AM
Hello!
I'm having a VMO Advancement and LR soon and was wondering approximately how long it will be until I can drive again? I'm supposed to take my license test 2 months after surgery!
Thanks!
Janice

Two questions:
Which leg?
Standard or Automatic car?

if it's your left leg and an automatic car, you'll be cruising much sooner.

SUE,
Good luck with you drivers test, however NO one on this web site is equipped to answer the question.  ONLY your doctor AFTER the surgery can give you that answer, and then it depends on how you heal, and how you advance in your physical therapy.  Driving too soon after surgery can present a danger to you and others so go slow and only accept answers from your doctor, in fcat legally if you are not cleared medically to drive, in some states your insurance may not even cover you if you were to have an accident, I know someone who drove before the doctor cleared her, was hit through no fault of her own by an impared driver and still lost her licence for a year when the insurance company reported to DMV she had knee surgery and had not yet been cleared to drive.  The insurance companies have access to a lot of data and wll do anything to avoid a claim, be careful.  Good luck

I also know of someone who was driving before she'd been released by the doctor.  However, she was at fault - slight rain and a curve - she slid over the curb into brick fence and a guys backyard.  She got out of the car with crutches, police asked and she told the truth.  Also she'd had pain medication which really affects reflexes.  She learned valuable lesson - and also lost her license.  Make certain you ask questions and obey!  eagle

When I had my ACLr done on my right leg, I was told I could drive when I felt I had sufficient control to safely switch from gas to break.  I drive an automatic.  You have to be able to control your foot in a hurry.  We all heal at different rates.  All it takes is a phone call to the OS's office to be safe.  I practiced in the house quickly moving my foot back and forth.  I was driving after two weeks, but I did not go far at first.  I did not want to risk fatigue.  Even when you do get the OK, make sure you have enough strength and agility in your leg in case you have to stop in a hurry.
