Title: Shattered left patella - would appreciate advice & info
Post by: Suejs14 on May 02, 2011, 02:59:33 PM
Hello,  I'm 65 and slipped on Easter Sunday, landing on my left knee, shattering the patella.  ORIF surgery on Wednesday - two salvageable pieces (one @ 2/3 of patella - upper part, second @ 15% of what was left) were wired together.  I'm on crutches in a full leg immobilizer (Velcro splint), with 'toe touch' for the bad leg, for six weeks.  Should I be increasing the weight bearing on the affected leg to facilitate healing?  I'm a widow and live alone, so have rented a wheel chair to increase ease of mobility and meal prep, etc.

I'm also concerned about muscle atrophy, wondering if it's safe to do glutteal crunches and some quad exercises (pressing knee down when supine).

Before last Sunday I was a single digit (right-handed) golfer and would love to hear that reasonable golf can again be in the picture for me.  After I'm freed from the full leg splint, is it typical to get a knee brace?
Because of the full leg splint, I cannot drive (I don't fit in the front seat of a car).  About how long after I'm out of the immobilizer could I expect to have some bend in the knee permitting driving?

Hi - Suejs14 - just wanted to let you know that there is a special section where the people with patella fractures hang out.  Go to The Specialist's office ---> Bone breaks around the knee
http://www.kneeguru.co.uk/KNEEtalk/index.php?board=21.0
The folks there can help you through this.

Hi Suejs 14: I did similar brilliant move in early Feb. I'm in the midst of early PT with low load on the knee. No driving for 2 months after the injury. You are in the right place to ask questions. Suejs14, before you do anything on your own, ask your doctor if it is ok. My PT wants to move ahead, but I will only do what my dr says I can do. My dr has repeatedly told me to to go slowly else I will be paying for his next vacation. I'm going to DC in 2 wks with a prong cane and walker for a middle school trip. I will be walking with the kids. I have a good bit of atrophy but will get it back.

Thanks for such quick responses - I'll head to the mentioned site.  Also appreciate advice to go slow - I feel like a hare in a tortoise shell, anxious to break out - and I've got a bit more than 5 weeks to go.  I see my orho surgeon next week to get the staples pulled and will bring a good list of questions.
