I know this means Rest Ice Compression Elevation, but can someone explain to me what Compression involves? I Rest, Ice and Elevate but don't Compress!

I think it means putting something like a tubigrip (google it) around the area so that it stopped it swelling up too much.

My knee is still a little swollen 3 weeks after injury and my physio still recommends Ice and Elevation to bring it down. Other palces suggest its only mega effective at the inital stages.

Thanks for this. It hasn't been suggested to me so I'll ask at my next appointment (not until 12 Nov)

Does anyone advise compression to reduce swelling?

My PT told me to massage upwards towards the heart and this seems to soften the swelling but only temporarily

The swelling and operation scar do impede my attempts to improve my ROM

Hi Greta,
My OS and PT both recommended RICE.
After my surgery, to protect the incision and provide compression, my knee was wrapped in two "ACE*" type bandages (6 inch wide x ~ 6 feet long elastic bands) with a sterile gauze pad on the incision.

I continue to use compression, with one bandage, wrapped around a gel cold-pack.

*American-made BD ACE bandage, a brand name for "All Cotton Elastic."

Compression is often done with elastic bandages.  I have seen two OS'es regarding my knee swelling.  One had said to wrap the joint, thigh and calf as tightly as possible to stop the swelling I had in my knee post-surgery.  The other said too much compression may cut circulation and increase risk of blood clots.  A snugly wrapped ACE bandage will reduce swelling.

After my recent arthroscopy, I came home with an ace bandage topped off by a compression sock. The compression sock was pretty tight since it is stretched over the bulky (giant) ace bandage, but not so tight that I am losing circulation.  I left this on all weekend and it did a pretty good job containing the swelling. I've continued to sleep in the ace bandage and compression sock (with leg elevated).  Not sure this is recommended for all circumstances, though
