Title: I need advice
Post by: okelfgirl on September 28, 2008, 11:34:56 PM
My knee has been hurting for about 10 months. I went into the OS   in late June of 2008 and he said it was probably plica syndrome. He prescribed Naproxen as needed, but  there was no change whatsoever. It is almost constant. I went in again in early August and he said that it was idiopathic and there was nothing really he could do. He named some things, but didn't seem too eager to do anything and said we'd just see how it goes.  Since then, it seems like the pain has gotten worse especially in the last two weeks or so. Now my hip on that same side(left) is hurting along with the knee. Whether that is from a gait change or what I don't know.  The doctor seem to believe I would eventually "grow" out of it, but it is affecting my life. I am 19 and commute everyday to college. I didn't feel I could audition for a play partly because of the pain. I am still taking up to 1000mg of Naproxen a day. Not sure how long he will continue to refill my prescription. Do I need to get a second opinion or go back in to the same OS? I would like to trust this doctor. How much time should I give it before seeking additional help?  Has anyone dealt with this and gotten over it? Any other advice? Thanks in advance.

Other facts: I do work around animals, so I've taken some falls, but  nothing that caused immediate pain or swelling and nothing  before the pain started. I also suffered from something believed to be a tick borne illness last year. Tested neg. for lyme.

Yes...I agree....get another opinion asap.  10 months is way too long to be hurting AND on those anti-inflams.  Plus, you are so young.  Take care of whatever this is properly now to avoid problems wnen you are older!

Let us know how you do...good luck!

Definately get another opinion.  Yes you hip could be giving you trouble if you are overcompensating for a hurting knee.  Taking inflamitories indefinately is not good for you.  Good luck.

I live in the  USA.  I live in a small  town, so there is limited access to doctors.

If your insurance allows it, you may need to travel to a bigger town nearby to get another opinion.  It's not an ideal solution, but it's better to get good care.
