Title: help torn meniscus newbie
Post by: aprilgirl on April 14, 2008, 02:08:37 PM
Hi Im a first timer 5 days ago I twisted and tore my meniscus Gp diagnoised, it gave way very painful and was swollen, swelling going down now. I can now straighten my leg a bit now but im terrified of trying to put any weight on it as it might give way again and put me back a few days. Could anyone advise how long I should immobolise it before I try. 16 years ago I had the same prob with the other knee after many months (NHS) I had an MRI but the Orth surg declined to operate because I have RA and quite loose joints I had physio to help strenghten everything. Im not sporty I just want to get back to walking again! Im 46 . I forgot to say the knee prob 16 yrs ago has been quite stable although i do have to be careful. thanks for reading this any advise much appreciated.

Hi aprilgirl ~ Sorry to hear about your troubles but five days post injury is not a very long time for your knee injury to do significant healing & are you sure what you're suffering is just a meniscal tear? An orthopedic specialist might be a better person to help you out than your GP. I'd sure see about getting to a specialist & in the meantime don't forget to use the ice. The longer you immobilize, the more your leg muscles deteriorate so I'd question not using your leg at all. Wishing you well....Ellie

Hi April
Crutches or a stick (cane) could help as you would be taking part of the weight off while still staying mobile. I think when I tore mine initially I was off work about 3 weeks, for the first week the pain spread from my foot to my waist (it was explained knee pain can travel both ways along your leg!) then it gradually reduced to being around the knee area which I could cope with.
Best wishes
