i am terrified of driving over bridges.  totally illogical.  i love water and swimming and have no fear of heights.  i don't mind walking on bridges.  driving over them does me in.  i will do everything i can to avoid them.  if i am a passenger i will close my eyes and hold my breath until we are off the bridge.  it is downright embarressing.

great thread by the way,

Cockroaches (shudder). They are just yuck.

Our local radio station ran this type of quiz one day and the weirdest thing I remember someone being scared of was cotton wool. The thought of rubbing it between their fingers really freaked them out!!

Look forward to seeing some more answers. We all need a good laugh!

Cheers,

Kathy

sorry nothing new!!
spiders, cockroaches (those huge ones in australia!) and wasps.
a wasp flew in through my car window about a fortnight ago on the way to see my elderley uncle.
i had seen something out of the corner of my eye while driving but as i could see nothing about when i stopped at the lights thought nothing else of it.
it was crawling around my neck and i was completley unaware til i looked down and saw it on the neck of my suit jacket,i took my jacket off faster then the speed of light and screamed my head off! my poor uncle thought i was having a fit or something!!

Insects.
NEEDLES!!! I almost died when I got my cortisone without any numbing or anything. Then the acid shots... :shudder:

OMG I was eating lunch (if you could call it that since my lunch goes from 10:00-10:25) outside last week and a wasp attacked me! It flew straight at my face. I was on the ground rolling trying to get away from it because I didn't have anything to swat it with except my sandwich (but that's MY food!). It must have been pretty humorous because everyone around me was crying because they laughed so hard.

what an excellent question!!

i have a long-winded answer.  i always figured that hell was personal and would be filled with the things the dead hated/feared the most.  therefore, my personal hell (essentially my phobias) would be me standing barefoot in a public bathroom being forced to sit on a public toilet while eating peas (YUCK!!!  SO GROSS!!!) and having many strange men with soft feet rub their feet on me.  across the room is a line of people with really bad body odor and their socks are kind of loose so there's that sock flap hanging off of their toes.  and there's a video playing of me driving in the snow.

i'd have to say my BIGGEST fear is driving in the snow.... sucks to live in wisconsin and never drive when it's snowing.  makes getting to class/work very difficult between october and may....

Hey Darci I wouldn't want to live in your hell.

I'm now facing another of my phobias, I have toothache, I broke a tooth a while ago, and now it hurts, and there is a disgusting taste in my mouth, I'm sure that there is an infection, good job that it can escape, and isn't trapped in there. O know the asnwer is really simple, just pick up the phone and go see the dentist.........................but.........................I just can't do that today. I'm bad enough when things are good, but today it's not good, so can't face it yet, back to the medicated mouthwash. :(

When I was younger I was really scared of spiders.  When I saw one my toes would automatically curl up inside my shoes.  I was at a bug zoo a few years ago and when they asked who wanted to hold the tarantula I volunteered.  I just wanted for once in my life to do something daring.  So here I was holding this gargantuan spider in my hand and my heart wasn't even beating faster.  I  petted it and surprisingly it was soft almost like a cat.

How nasty is this.

Have just got back from getting my tooth pulled, I'm glad that's done, but was a little shocked that their one halloween decoration is a flaming great plastic spider hanging from the light, right above your face as you are lying in thr chair. Now real spiders can get me to leave a room, but plastic ones are OK, I have known people who freak at any sort of spider, real, picture or model, add that to a dentist chair and I'm sure a lot of prople would find themselves in hell

Title: Re: PHOBIAS! What R U SCARED of??
Post by: Berta on October 24, 2007, 01:23:51 AM
I'm glad it's over as well, was in that rotten chair for just about an hour, had 3 (or was it 4) lots of injections and it still hurt, so in the end had to decide wether to just let him pull it in one big heave, or to leave it loosened and take antibiotics for a week. The infection stops the pain killer working right. Seeing as we had made a start, and figuring that once I got out of the chair, it's going to be a while before I'm getting it together enough to go back, I made him promise that if he was going to pull it he would be real quick, and out it came.

The dentist phobia has not gone down any after this visit, but at least the jaw got a couple of weeks to settle down before we go on vacation. The injections are just starting to wear off, so I'm off to take some pain pills

From a bad experience when I was a Child at the Dentist when I had my tooth pulled out that had decay. I hated it when they put me under with sleeping gas it made me scarred of Dentists throughout my childhood but as I grow older they gave me local anesthetic when extracting a tooth or doing a filling. They not so bad after all and will have a overcrowded tooth removed next month that no longer bother me.

I still hate the idea of having a general anesthetic if I ever need to have one as I hate Hospitals and the thought of any Surgery would scare me a lot.

very good thread

Mine are pretty common.  Spiders and most bug well really any bug that flies, crawls, walks etc.   OK so all bugs.  Butterflies are ok and so are lady bugs - go figure.   But I love snakes and reptiles.  Also, scared of my dentist and he's a really nice guy who deals well with my terror of him and my hate of his profession.

Fun to see we all have fears - makes us really normal I think.

Be well all,
Deborah

Denny - sorry about your tooth, especially because it required a visit to one of  THEM!!!

This ones confusing. I like to be tough and try to be tough. I did fear factor live at universal and had 6 scorpians on my head ( I don't mind bugs). It was nerve racking but I loved that I did it and went on and on how fear is not a factor for me. BUT.... I was a big wuss when it came to the roller coasters with the special effects like the fire shooting out at you. I could feel the heat and hated it. My husband who is a lieut on the fire dept.  thought that was a hoot. And kept reminding me fear is a factor when I tried to chicken out on the Mummy ride, which of course I then had to do becuase I do let peer preasure get the best of me (even at 37). lol.

bugs (all kinds), germs,
not being able to escape from something/someplace, this is the worst fear I have.  It's so bad that it applies sometimes braces and casts too.  Braces are fine because I can take them off, but If I wear them too long I have problems.  When I broke my ankle, I was having such bad panic attacks from the cast, that my OS took it off and put me in a walking boot.

I also used to be afraid of the dark and the basement, but I kind of gotten over these since getting into paranormal investigations.

Sputum. Not the kind that people spit normally, but the kind we nurses have to deal with that comes from the deep dark depths of peoples chests. I can't empty a suction cannister of secretions without gagging. I'm gagging just thinking about it! Blah!!  :P

No me, but my poor teenage son is completely freaked by spiders.  There a Huntsman spider that's taken up residence in his bedroom. It's 20cm in diametre...he slept on the couch the night he saw it on his doona.  Instead of calmly putting an icecream container over it and taking it outside, he went into complete panic and scared it off, so he didn't know where it had gone.  I tried to get it on crutches but failed.  He took an hour to pluck up the courage to capture it and then release it across the road so it wouldn't come back.  I could hear all the sound effects, counting to ten, talking to himself and the genuine terror he felt, poor kid, I know how much guts it took to catch it but he did it.

I'm with Sue on the moths. And also butterflies because they're just pretty moths. I have long curly hair and am afraid they will get tangled in my hair and be fluttering around next to my face. But I'm fine with spiders and snakes.
My other thing is I can't stand anyone touching my feet as they are very ticklish, and can't watch anyone touching anyone else's feet, even on TV. The mad thing is injections - I don't mind getting them so long as I don't look, but again I can't watch them on TV even when I know it's not real!

Spiders when they move - if they stay still thats fine but as soon as they move i am off.  Living alone means that i now have to get rid of them myself and if that happens i squeal like a child and make lots of noise.

I'm afraid of heights... which might have contributed to my fall while snow skiing a few years ago... it's been downhill ever since!† No pun intended!!† :-)

And I'll have to add wasps to the list now.† I felt so helpless recently when I was strapped in my CPM, almost asleep due to the pain meds, and a wasp flew straight towards me!!† Screaming didn't help because no one else was at home!† I just waved my arms around like a crazy person... so I guess I'm glad no one else was at home!† Happened 4 more times that week!!† Needless to say, I was glad when another cold front came to town and those demons stayed in their nests and out of our house!

Looking back, I guess I should have taken a hint from our daughter and added them to the list years ago.† She hated wasps with a passion and had been stung several times.† When she was 5 (she's 12 now) and lost her first tooth, she was afraid to put her tooth under her pillow that night.† I couldn't understand why until she finally said "But Mommy, what if the tooth fairy has a side-kick that's a wasp, then what??"† We could tell she'd thought about that one ALL day!!

I am afraid of boats.  Not to be confused with the fear of water.  I can swim fine, but boats scare the hell out of me.  Even boats in dry dock.  It's ironic as I am from the Maritimes.

I am also scared of the wind.  It makes me cry when it gets so strong.  Eeek.

I no longer have a phobia of having a general anesthetic after having my 1st every surgery on my right knee in November 2009. It was not as bad as I thought it was going to be and it felt nice just before falling asleep and no where near as bad as sleeping gas when I was a kid at the dentist which I dont have to worry about if I needed more surgery in the future as most hospitals give an injection to put you to sleep.

AND - this is strange and pathetic - tall buildings like windmills, water towers and observation towers. This is most likely due to my also being terrified of heights.

Being buried alive. Two lifetimes back I died in a mine cave-in in Bodie, California. I thought I had gotten over this phobia by visiting that area and going into a mine, plus doing all kinds of cave exploration down on the Yucatan, but when I got this TPF, and had external fixation, the feeling of being trapped and dying overcame me, and it was frightening.

I remember tons of lives, but very few deaths.

Most of the fears I've seen are legitimate...

I get average heebee geebess from spiders and other creepy crawlies. I'm okay with snakes if they don't pop out at me (I use to use one as a teaching tool, Fluffy, she was a good snake till she bit my coworker...)

But... my real, terrifies the crap out of me phobia, you're gonna laugh.... pool vacuums. No joke. Walking into a pool supply store is terrifying-- I can be within 20 feet as long as I am not near water, but if I am near water and I even see one anywhere close I freak out.

I've been afraid of them ever since I can remember... no idea why, but... yeah... *shudder*

Iím a claustrophobic to a great degree. Any closed especially tight place freaks me completely out. I even become very uncomfortable being restrained to any extent. While in the hospital following surgery and in casts and hooked to I-V, I was unable to mobilize myselfÖthis terrified me. As someone else already mentioned, being buried alive is an unrelenting fear of mine even to the extent that I am considering cremation upon my death instead of conventional casket burial. I canít seem to convince myself that some part of me may still be aware that Iím trapped under 6 feet of earth never to escape.

Obviously I have to have a very open MRI and I donít do airplanes! Iíve demonstrated such severe claustrophobia at times, that I fear Iíve actually affected a couple people Iíve known to become somewhat claustrophobic as well, something that Iím certainly not proud of.

Although not as severe as your case, I'm claustrophobic as well. Airplane rides are really though. Diving must have been the worst yet, though. Enjoyed maybe 10 minutes of a 4 day course, not my thing haha.

I am glad to see I'm not the only one afraid of moths! I love every animal, including insects, but only seeing a picture of a moth makes me cry and panic, even if I know it's totally irrational.

I also have agoraphobia and the fear of losing control, so the anaesthesia part of the knee surgery was very panicking for me.

Every year  I notice that living becomes scarier. But the phobia I still can not beat, appeared early at the school. That is a kind of panic to fail an exam or any task. It is still the same at the college, every time I have to write an essay or prepare the case study, I can't start at once. It is similar in some cases with procrastination but emotionally  completely opposite.
