Title: ACL surgery in 6 weeks, need answers!
Post by: cschooling on August 20, 2007, 10:17:38 AM
Hi, Ive just been given my OP data which is in 6 weeks! Ive a torn ACL and I am going to have a graft from my Handstring.
Questions which I have is will all this be done by keyhole? and how many insicions will they make? how big will the scarring be on the knee and also from the handsring?
How long until I can start driving again?  What about the recovery to the handsring?
help?

These are all questions that you need to ask your doctor. They have different protocols so your experience will not necessarily be the same as someone else's.

What's a handstring?

I'm guessing that a HANDSTRING is a typo - should be HAMSTRING.
My ACL reconstruction was done arthroscopically - I have 4 little scars (each about 1/2 inch long).  The hamstring was harvested through one of these incisions also.  I can't remember exactly how long it was before I drove (depends on whether the operated leg is your "driving leg") - I think it was about 4 weeks though.

Unfortunately, my ACL reconstruction didn't last long - only about 3 months.

Good Luck!

Hi there,

You may want to try posting down in the cruciate ligament bulletin board; look under the "Specialist's Office" heading on the bulletin board homepage.

Also, there's lots of info on ACL recon on KNEEguru's main website. Here's a link to a multi-part tutorial, be sure to look at all the segments.
