Title: Complications following TKR
Post by: jault on August 01, 2007, 03:09:16 AM
I'm new here so pardon my repeating anything which may elsewhere be posted.
I had right TKR on 6/1/06. Following surgery I was able to get ROM from 0 to 127 without a problem but I had strange and changing sensations...swelling, tightness, the usual but in my case it would change locations each day and in fact sometimes several times during the day. My Dr was puzzled. Didn't think it was scar tissue because I gor ROM Tried several things..steroids tablets, thought it might be pain syndrome sent me to specialist who gave me lyrica, sent me for 2nd opinion ( I also sought a 3rd on my own.) finally at 1 year decided to go back in . He found some adhesions (?) but nothing alarming. That was May 17, 07. The healing from that surgery has been identical...the strange sensations continue. The replacement is fine, I can feel and tell that even without the x rays, but I continue to be miserable because of these sensations, sometimes so debillitaing the reduce ROM and keep me from normal everyday activities. Sensations range from feeling like swelling, thickiening of tissue to very metallic and stiff. The are covered also ranges from very small band to 2-3 " above and below the knee as well as just in front or also all the way around the knee.
Needless to say I sometimes feel as if I am going crazy and sometimes just wish I would.   Has anyone heard of anything like this?

In my experience, strange sensations after any surgery are common and normal. I've had about 20 surgeries and have always had some weird feelings afterwards. They always go away eventually. But even with that, you are always going to have pains here and there. There's no getting around that. You don't have a normal knee and you never will. I had a PKR last December and still get swelling, tightness and a variety of other things now and again for no apparent reason. I think you'll find that if you stop obsessing about it you'll feel a lot better. It's kind of like a car that has a certain noise. You get used to it after a while and just ignore it.
