Title: newbie here....diislocated knee. 9 years of problem.
Post by: pinkybiff on May 06, 2007, 08:27:04 PM
the first time i dislocated my knee i was 16, sent to the doctor and because of cheap parents left with a leg length knee brace to be worn for some time. ever since then i've just learned that i cant move my leg side to side or move things with my foot to push things to the side or it will make me leg ''jiggle'' and it scares the s**t out of me quite honestly. So its just become a part of my routine in the last 9 years that every 6 months or so my knee will dislocate.  While- at work yesterday, i was walking down the stairs, somehow stepped down wrong and my knee just popped out, and popped back in after a second. OH man. was it excruciating....we all know right... So my work- which includes a lot of physical activity, i by no means just sit at a desk-though i wish i only had yesterday..... sends me to a clinic and i leave the clinic with a hinged knee brace, anti-flammatorys, ice pack.  honestly, i assumed it was just a basic location that i have now and then and didnt want to go to the doctor.... but since it happened at work...thats how things go. I'm sincerely not concerned in regards to workers comp, since this is an ongoing issue for the last 9 years...

this time however.. i just feel screwed. it hurts way more than any time before. and i really believe the older i get the more s**t hurts in life. my pain tolerance is just failing me. And the clinic doctor mentioned that i need to consider going to an orthopedic specialist, getting an MRI, and possibly surgery if i never want this to be a problem again...but i read all these other posts about people who have had surgery, and it just doesn't sound like they are getting better. and while i'm quite sure they're circumstances are way worse than mine, i can't help but wonder.

Does anyone else find if frustrating sharing this stuff with spouses or friends whom have never dislocated or broken anything? My husband says 'oh baby , i'm sorry you hurt your knee...but hey can you run upstairs and grab something for me?"
Seriously, it quites irritating.

ANYHOW... i'm new to this place. it seems quite informative..and i go back to the doctor tuesday morning. any advice or words of wisdom or anything is quite helpful.

thx.

Dislocations year after year can make your cartilage wear down..you should get on road do Mri and then see in what shape your knee is.
There are different surgeries that can be done to correct a knee that dislocates. Also try find a OS who has good knowledge in this and read around a lot on this site and ask questions when they pop up. Also prepare yourself to your next visit by writing down all questions that come up for you and bring that with you.
But first option often is PT, to see if that can help..as surgery is always surgery. Is the brace helping ?
I know this with people around who doesn't understand. And I am sure if he would be in your shoes he would be really whiney..men ::)

Hi Pinkybiff

sorry you are having these problems.

Go and see an othopaedic sugeon as Nettan said!  Get all the xrays, MRI and opinions that you need and then you can see how to proceed.

You are right - you do see a lot of people with problems post surgery here - but that I mainly what the board is for - to help each other out - everyone has their own experience and advice and we all want to help where we can.  Thousands of people have knee surgeries every year and never find this board and then also those that do and have had  a successfull outcome move on and no longer post here - which is why you find more people with problems posting.

As for people who are less than considerate to you pain - they do not understand what it is to suffer!
Good Luck with finding the answers you need :)

You should also find out about therapy. I dislocated my knee when I was 15 (but I chopped of most of my chondal.) I didn't start having problems untill I was older. I kept my muscles in good shape with biking, hiking and light lifting. When I started step arobics is when I started having problem again, that was 12 years after the injury.
Nattan and anja are so right about seeing a doc and getting an MRI.
Oh I almost forgot...My lateral muscle is stronger than my medial muscle so... the lateral muscle actually pulls the knee cap making it dislocate. My pt told me when I feel as if that may happen I should put my palm on the outside of my knee, as if I am holding it in place, not push to hold firmly. So far that has help. BUt the big help is getting my medial muscle stronger. Thats why I suggest PT.
Good luck!!

Hi,

Good luck with your appointment today. Let us know how it goes. Don't forget to ask a lot of questions and don't leave your doctor's office without knowing what treatment you can get, how long it will take for you to get better. how much physio you may need and see if you can get a long term prognosis out of him.

Take care,

Laura x
