Title: Plica Removal
Post by: squeezeevans on May 01, 2007, 06:09:59 PM

Went in for an arthroscopy this morning but instead of coming out with the lateral release which they thought they might do, they instead ended up remiving my plica.  At the moment its sore but obviously its hard to tell what its going to be like in future.

Just wondered in peoples experience were they weight bearing straight away? I was given crutches but at mo all i've really done is sat on sofa :p.

I just kinda wonder how long average recovery takes? I'd read a lot about lateral release but now I;ve come out with something different I've know idea what to do hehe!

Any advice would be appreciated
(oh yeah in case it mattered had bit of rough cartilage cleaned up too!)

Wow, that's what I'm suffering with, although obviously I can't be sure until they go in and have a look.

I have pain on the medial side of the right knee, a 'guitar' string in the same place and a bit of stiffness sometimes - no jokes please!

What were your symptoms 'pre-op and what did the surgeon say after the op?

Sorry I know you are looking for answers, but it would really help.

I had plica removal on 2/27/07 due to a traumatic cycling injury.  I can currently do everything but squat down.  I was on crutches for two weeks, doing pt within 5 days and released from the dr. at the end of March.  I could tell the following day after surgery that my knee was better.

everyone I have spoken too that has any kind of knee surgery has always started PT within a week of surgery.  I didn't push it for 2 months after surgery and now Im in pain even after the PT.

At the very least see if you can get PT to prevent scar tissue buildup from the surrounding area.

Oh and yes i could do wieght bearing after Plica surgery (not removed).  But keep your knee up and iced for several days (except to use the outhouse).  swelling is your biggest problem now.

good luck

I have many of the symptom for a plica problem:

knee clicks sometimes
pain on medial side
guitar string on medial side

But I also get the floaty kneecap sensation about a day afterwards if I try knee extensions on a weight machine, even at low weight. Does this sound like part of the same thing to anyone?
