Title: Disappointing News
Post by: luckygrandma on January 05, 2007, 02:06:24 PM
I was scheduled for Back Surgery January 8th. I have been scheduled for this surgery for months. I just had my medical clearance from my GP on Tuesday and I get a call from my Surgeons office on Wednesday saying that he was called out of town on an emergency and that my surgery has been postponed. The worse part is they can't even give me a new date yet. They said they would call next week or the week after.

The Pain is getting so bad and I'm so tired of not being able to walk without pain.  I had three knee operations leading up to this surgery and so 4 surgeries in the past two years. I just want to get it over with and get on with my life. I'm really nervous about this surgery and now I just have been given more time to think about it.  I just hope when I get a new date it isn't two months from now. Any words of encouragement would be appreciated. Has anyone had this happen, canceled surgery days before it is to take place and have completed all the presurgical testing. Will they make me go through everything again.

I am so sorry this happened.  I know all the anticipation and worry that comes before surgery.  Hopefully, they can get you a date that is not going to be too far out.  That way you can start to get your life back and at least know when.

I have had friends that have had surgery cancelled, one while they were waiting at the out patient surgical center.  It is never a good thing but I like to believe it is truly beyond our surgeons control.  Also, I would hope you do not have to redo the presurgical testing.  Once done you should be good to go.  Obviously something major just happened in their life too.

I hope that you get a quick resolution to this, I'll be thinking about you.   Deborah

I am sorry to hear that your surgery has been canceled. I was prepped and ready to go for a hysterectomy years ago when they came in and told me that my doc had a death in his family and my surgery was canceled. I was so upset, they had done everything but the enema, thank God !! Well, he came in a short time later and told me to pick a date, he was coming back December 30th and did the procedure December 31st. Happy New Year to me.

I am sure that you will be on the top of his list for when he comes back. Are you taking pain meds? I can understand you wanting to get this over and done with and getting your life back to normal. Please be patient and know that we are thinking about you. Keep posting, we are here for you.

I am so sorry that this happened to you. I know that you have been worried yet somehow excited about the prospect of being painfree.

I experienced something similar. I was in the hospital, in the gown , waiting for them to start my IV when a nurse that I had never met walked in and told me to get dressed and go home, they did not have time to do my surgery that day. This was for a hysterectomy. I totally freaked out as I was already a nervous wreck. I had never heard of such a thing before.  I think that mine was a blessing in disguise as I left that group of doctors and found an awesome new one. By the way, I did NOT have to redo my preop tests.

Good luck, I hope that you get a date soon.

That really sucks!  You get yourself all ready for it then they cancel it.  Well, I hope that they are able to get you in ASAP so you can get on with recovering.

Thanks everyone for your responses. After hearing some of your stories I feel lucky. At least I wasn't lying on the operating table when they cancelled.  It's just so frustrating. I had all planned what I would be doing for the next few days and then zap everything came to a hault. I've been walking around the house in a daze today not knowing what to do with myself.

As far as pain meds. When I decided to have the surgery I had been going to a Pain specialist for injections in my back and was on very strong pain meds. My Spine surgeon said he didn't want me having anymore injections in my back and I stopped the pain meds as I was getting side affects from them, so for quite awhile I haven't been taking anything figuring things were going to get better. When they cancelled my surgery I asked for some pain meds as I was going crazy with pain and they had no problem calling a prescription into the drug store for me. I guess they felt that is the least they can do.

I hope they schedule me ASAP as I would hate to wait another 2 months and have something come up again.

I believe medical clearance is only for 30 days and  pre admission testing is only good for a  few days. Since they take blood and all.

I had a set back when my OS had his hip operation.   I was all set to book it in Sept but looking back at it now.  It worked out fine.  I passed a kidney stone in October.

My blood tests showed my Potassium low and they put me on Potassium supplements until my surgery, but this was based on my date of January 8. When I saw my GP and asked him about it he said my Potassium is not much below the normal rate, but they like it higher before surgery as anesthesia lowers your Potassium and it can be fatal if it gets too low. I think I'll call my GP about it but I can't see continue taking the Potassium until I get a new date as I'll run out before then and it may be lower again by the time I am tested again.  Oh!! I hope I don't have to go through everything again. I hope so much that I hear something by next week so my surgery is not too delayed. I'm falling more and more with this problem and a year out from my TKR I'm using my walker most of the time now.  Falling is getting to be a real art as I can't fall on the left side because of my hip replacement , I can't fall on m right side becasue of my RTKR and my back is off limites too so I landed on my "ask me no questions" and have another bruise to add to my collection.
