Thank you for reporting these, they've been removed and the user/email address used banned.

We'll try to make some changes to curb the spam, though that is a tough thing to do as these days there are computers registering and posting on forums automatically.  :-\

I've just received this morning, two identical pornographic posts with images in my personal message box! Help!

Do you mean that you received PM's as well as there being the forum posts?

think that is because the Knee Guru sends an automatic notification by email if there is a PM for you - your email address is not on display to the public.

I realise that my 2 messages had already been sorted in to SPAM in yahoo ... so any Yahoo-ites may want NOT to open spam messages purporting to come from KNEE geeks or guru. Also those with Yahoo, ought to be able to ban them from getting anywhere near - go to Options, and there is the information there about banning totally.

While we are trying to curb the spam posts, you may want to disable PM notifications to your own email address. You can do this by modifying your Profile, "Personal Message Options". Untick the option to Notify by email everytime you receive a personal message.

Lavasoft have a free download for you to use to check if there are any nasty little bugs on your computer.

If you vist the site http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ they can help you. There are also other companies like norton and mcAfee that also do virus software and many others..

Hope this helps.

It is best to scan for viruses on a regular basis and make it part of your routine.

It is absolutely disgraceful that someone can post information such as this. I am really disappointed with this site believing it to be a genuine forum for people to share knowledge.

there is only one place for this person!

Sharron,

I feel that your comment is very HARSH !!! IT IS A VERY GENUINE forum which has and is helping thousands of people with their knee problems, sharing knowledge and providing an enormous amount of support to each other.

Yes, it was disgraceful that someone posted all that vulgarity but that was really just unfortunate - sites like this exist on being open to all that need help and it is tragic that it happened but I don't think for one minute you can lay blame anywhere other than with the sicko that did the dirty deed.
Title: Re: Inappropriate messages
Post by: The KNEEguru on September 18, 2006, 09:09:18 PM
It is a difficult place, the internet, where those people who are genuinely trying to make a difference to people's lives in a positive way have to constantly battle to prevent spammers and porn-posters from bringing their sites down. Every attempt to improve security seems to attract attempts to break it down.

I just want to reassure readers, that it appalls me to think of you having been subjected to such an invasion of your private space.

It seems from all the mails I have been sent that the letters to your private email boxes are being automatically generated by the forum system, not to distribute such porn, but as part of an optional setting to notify users of mail in their PM boxes. It does not appear that the post generates any viral activity or otherwise causes harm to the computer - but of course it has caused distress and anger, just as the person posting it hoped it would.

I am so very sorry about this.

Thank you but I am sure that no one on this site holds you personally responsible.

It is a great site and a great number of us really enjoy and rely on it - bad things happen in life - luckily the good things like this site far outweigh the bad ones! ;D

Keep up the good work!

I received this disgusting e-mail today too and immediately wrote the moderator who was so apologetic and she told me that this person had been banned. I think this is a wonderful site and the only thing that disturbed me was that this person would use a site like this where people are suffering as it is, to get his jollies.

My Internet Provider has Spam Blocker, pop up blocker and virus prtection, but if I put the spam blocker on HIGH I don't get any mail at all so I have it on MEDIUM. If I put anything else on my computer they interfer with each other. I had PCcillin on my computer but had to remove it as the Firewalls between, Windows, Internet Provider and my Virus Program were interferring with each other. My Internet Provider said I didn't need anything else because they have it covered.

I don't think just hiding your e-mail from the public does any good as there is a place where you can be sent a Personal message anyway.

I think Knee Garu is doing all that can be done and I certainly don't blame them. This is the Internet and no matter where you go on the Internet you can run into this. These people will post their dirty laundry anyplace they can get in.

I got these things, too, but I immediately deleted them before clicking on any of the liniks. I agree with the Guru - where there's a universal medium, there will be those who succeed in corrupting it. But they can only defeat us if we let them, so I for one plan to keep posting and reading and sharing, with some added safeguards.

As with all things, the bad guys only win if we let them.

This course is definitely worth staying.

Ok, I got them too.

On the up side, and yes there was one.  It brought me back to the site.  I haven't been here reading for about a year.

I have just living with the pain, and although my husband is very understanding, he doesn't have knee pain.

I am just starting to post, in the past all I did was read.

I am a 40 year old wife and home schooling mom, in perpetual recovery from an Osteochondral Fracture.  Never thought that I would be using a cane at age 40. :(

Yes, tony1233 - I am so sorry. You were the first to report this to me, and I slammed a ban on the post without taking time to read that you were just letting me know. Once I had realised my error I had to leave it for a day as the system is just designed that way. I really do apologise.

I'd like to point out that when we keep FREAKING OUT about this we are giving this guy exactly what he wants.  He's sitting back reading all of these posts and he's laughing it up.  All these posts a just putting icing on his cake.  The more we talk about it the more reward we are giving him.

We have added a captcha safeguard to Registration to prevent spam bots/computer programs from automatically registering and posting, we should see a decrease in spam posts in general. We are discussing other options as well.

The California service provider where those obscene posts and PMs originated is now investigating. They seem to take this quite seriously. If the posts had originated in Russia or China like most of the other spam, we'd have no recourse at all. Unfortunately this is a reality on the internet, website owners have been combatting spam for years, it's a very serious problem on interactive websites such as this. We find a way to stop them, and they'll find a way around it.

I hadn't opened the links and now am glad about that! But I had better run a check. Thanks for the heads up! Not that this is funny business, but it can be funny where these things show up. I worked somewhere where a main link on our website suddenly took you to a French porn site. Yikes! We had very polite notes from our members that thought we should be aware of this!!!! It happens. It isn't funny. Thanks for taking care of this.

Is this still circulating?

It's no longer going out, however those who hadn't yet checked their messages will be finding it.

We have now restricted Microgeeks from being able send PM's, in order to prevent this from happening if we can. You'll need to have accumulated 21 posts before being able to send them. This way at least, no one can register and then start to spam PM members straight away.
Title: Re: Inappropriate messages

I understand it seems unfair. But, anyone can register, and send pornographic spam PM's to dozens or hundreds of users, as has recently happened. Forcing people to have posted to give them the priviledge of using the PM system seems a good option at the moment.

Hiya

Well my left knee has been fine, my right knee is  sore and bloody aches at night under kneecap
but not causing me any real problems, could take anti inflams but rather not unless gets worse. Physio thinks Patella Tendinitis rather than OA pain.

Had my 10 days at Goring physio couldn't do much to straighten leg but she told me only 6 degrees difference from right leg and not a big deal if it remains like that. I managed to run on the grass there a few yards.

Went to a Black Tie a couple of weeks ago and danced solid for three hours without any ill effects and just got back from Zante where I put back on some of my lost pounds

Waiting to see the medical officer to see what restrictions on what I can do , so until then office bound
suits me fine.

How are things with you

running, dancing for 3 HOURS   :o  holidays - wow you have it all mate! Really pleased it is going okay for you.

Are you still going to the gym? hope so - yeah I know I am cheeky but think everyone should do it! lol

So ..... if you say the right things the FMO will keep you in the office - very cushy!! lol

Yeah I am good thanks - back to work next monday - funny have got quite used to being at home - didn't even have this much time off on maternity leave!! It has been a good break really - my daughter has gone of to uni so the house stays tidy, only half the washing - trouble is she is pleading poverty already and it hasn't even been a week - that is why I have to work - to fund her parties! ;D bless her.

My knee is good - obviously still painfull at times - well night time actually so still crap at sleep but hopefully when back at work should be so knackered.......

Nice to see you back
Take care

Just a question why if you are not doing anything with them does your knees ( and mine) ache at night
if you keep your legs still nothing should be rubbing, so what is aching???

I have found massaging my knee cap and moving the fluid in the knee stops the ache ( trick my PT showed me)

OOH Mike

if I knew of a remedy for that I think I would market it and be a VERY RICH WOMAN !!!

It is so frustrating.

I reckon it is the lack of movement - when you keep on the move the joint is kept well oiled with fresh blood the whole time - when you lie still it all slows down so you don't get that fresh blood doing it's healing bit.

I go back to work tomorow - and I reckon that when I stop I wull have the legs from hell.
