Title: Fractured Patella
Post by: frantad on July 31, 2006, 06:22:36 PM
I am two months post surgery from a fractured patella (broken in half horizonal) with a 50 degree bend, several pins and wire. I will have to have the pins and wire remove, what is the recovery on this and is this a painful procedure.  In addition my PT indicated that should I not have the bend that I am looking by the time this surgery is necessary that I should indicate to the OS to bend my leg while I am under.  Has anyone had this done, if so, was this painful?

My son's injury was similar to yours except his break was vertical, his repair required an 8 1/2 incision and 2 screws, no wires. He is having the screws out tomorrow and from everything I have been told he will experience pain for a few days but it shouldn't be as bad and the pain from the injury and repair. I will let you know next week how bad it truly was. Best of luck

Hi Frantad,

You might ask this question in the Specialist section under bone breaks around the knee.  I know that several folks there have had screw and/or wire removal done after the fracture had healed - typically done if pain is felt from the wires or if they are hampering ROM.  Like Tigergirl;s son, I didn't have wires used, just 2 screws.  Unless they hamper ROM, I will not have them removed.  I broke miine in half vertically and also a piece virtually destroyed at the end of the triangle.  I am only  6 and half weeks out from the injury and 4 and 1/2 from surgery.

It may be that the ROM is limited by the wires.  How long ago was the surgery.  I have about 65 degrees, but was hampered by being at 0 extension for almost 4 1/2 weeks.  I am working slowly to improve that, but my doctor is very conservative and wants to wait another two weeks before going to the PT.  He doesn't want to rebreak the patella.  Thank goodness.
