Title: Very painful knee since october...
Post by: abicham on January 30, 2006, 12:17:45 PM
Hi guys, most of you have probably already seen my last post where I was talking about algoneurodystrophy because my doctor in France suspected I had it. Well it turns out I don't as I did what they call a "scintigraphy" in french which consists of scanning your whole body and wherever the bone is whiter than the rest it means that it is inflamed or worse. Very interesting exam although I am not more advanced as to why I still can't weightbare after 3 and a half months... I have now seen 3 knee surgeons, had an mri scan, and arthroscan, seen various osteopaths and acupunturists as well as a magnetiser and a healer. All this has cost me a fortune and it has all been to no avail... The surgeons say that the damage behind my patella isn't bad enough to operate on and that I have to be patient... But how long? Surely if my patella isn't badly damaged I should at least be able to walk shouldn't I? After the scintigraphy my doctor said that I also had a "periostitus" (I don't think that's the right word in english as I looked it up on internet and nothing appeared) but the word in french was "périostite". Does anyone know what the word might be in english?
My physio thinks that my whole nervous system has gone to pieces and that's why I'm in so much pain, I had a trapped nerve last year near where I had broken my pelvis and had to take anti-epileptic drops; could there be some relationship between these events?
Does anyone know about the nervous system around the patella, is it possible to be in pain without having anything mechanically wrong?
Thank you for reading, I am desperate!

Hey !!

Have you been tested for RSD/CRPS ?
A condition you can develop after even minor injury. I have it. How do they treat your pain right now ?
Have you seen any painmanagement specialist or any neurologhist who really are good at this ?
You can read more abour RSD here:
Feel free ask me if you have questions...

I think algodystrophy is an old-fashioned and/or English-as-a-second-language way of saying RSD/CRPS.  It's the same thing, from what I can tell.

All I can think reading your story is scar tissue.  It can trap nerves and duplicate the symptoms of other conditions.  It is often not caught by doctors unless a scope is done and they can physically see the scarring.

I think the perios...whatever is a bone spur.  This is a deposit of additional calcium and bone material, kind of like a bony protuberance, that is often found when there is arthritic damage.

Read about arthrofibrosis and see what you think.  Go to the soft tissue healing problems section.  To be honest, I remember reading about your case awhile ago (weren't you in a border region of France--Strasbourg or something--hmmm, maybe it was Lyons??) and thinking it really sounded like a case of arthrofibrosis or excess scar tissue.

Just a thought, might be worth considering.  You might also want to send a private message to the Kneeguru, as she might be able to direct you toward a highly reputable doctor in your region.
