Title: knee pain and swelling
Post by: stillhurting on December 20, 2005, 03:21:25 AM
Hi everyone, I am new to this forum and I am very impressed with the huge amount of helpful information that is available.  Maybe someone can give me some much wanted advice,  About 4 months ago I fell and injured my right knee, I fell approximately 5 feet to the concrete floor, I was given a knee stabilizer to wear for 2 weeks, no relief then sent for an mri that showed a contusion to the outside of my right knee, sent for pt for 3 weeks and pain and swelling got even worse, I am taking an antiinflamitory and some pain med, the orthopedic surgeon wants to see me again because things have not improved I am now having pain that travels up my thigh and my left knee is beginning to hurt me.  The pt told me that I have traumatic bursitis and possibly a piece of bone that is floating around in my knee. If anyone can offer me some advice or if anyone has had this problem I would appreciate any replies.

Hey.. I wish I could offer you more help, but I don't have the same sort of problem as you. Make sure you keep up with the RICE, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation and just take it easy until you find out what is wrong with your knee. :( Hang in will be good to see the OS and find out exactly what is wrong.

Lot's of luck and enjoy the holidays... best you can

Welcome to the board.  Bone contusions can take a long time to heal.... you can use heat on the contusion area once the swelling has gone down - this will promote healing.....
Sometimes when you get these contusions you can also do some nerve damage and that takes awhile to heal also, but a hot water bottle over the thigh area helps.....
Hopefully you'll get some answers from your OS.  Good luck and let us know how you are doing....

If there continues to be a problem with swelling and pain, after a period of RICE as mentioned, then you must ask the OS/specialist to review your condition in detail. By this I mean getting the various tests done to see what other possible damage there is and to ascertain what needs to be done and when. This is so important as maybe treating one problem is not sufficient and proper diagnosis is needed.
With Warm Regards, Harry

Thanks to everyone that was able to reply, I  am having my 2nd mri tomorrow and then another trip to the OS in a few days, I only hope that he can help as my so called good knee is now hurting me.  It has been almost 4 months since my fall with no relief.   I will give an update as soon as I can thanks to everyone and Godbless

No probs, I hope you can get better as I know too well what the time is like before having possible surgery, its this time that you need to keep positive and looking forward to getting better in body and mind, but if anything it helped me to look forward to the solutions that were ahead instead of reminding myself how stupid I was in the first place to get injured. Wish you well for the MRI. Harry

Hello again everyone,
I just got the results of my 2nd MRI today, it again showed a Bakers Cyst, a contusion of the bone and moderate swelling. I have not seen the OS yet I see him on the 5th. Is it possible for the MRI to miss something because of the swelling?  I guess I am just wondering what the OS might suggest, does the Bakers Cyst come from the injury and should I still be in pain and have a swollen knee 4 months after the accident? I am having pain that is in my quad area and also up my thigh and at times my foot and leg feels as though it is asleep,  can a knee injury cause all of these problems and I don't know what to expect from the OS. I appreciate any advice that you guys may have.

Initially, i think it is possible to miss something on an MRI, but hopefully the MRI will show whats wrong and willl allow your OT to talk to you about the options.

I agree that RICE is good, when i have a flare i alternate between heat and cold over a few days, its a pain to boil the kettle all the time or keep stocked with ice but it really does help.

I dont really have anything new to say, i think that the main thing is that you dont let it ruin the holiday.
