Allow yourself a day of feeling like this and wake up tommorw with a new thought in your head... that pain isn't going to win, it may slow you down but ultimately you're in charge and you control what you can and can't do, Not your pain!
Every single piece of research out there shows that people who have a positive attitude get over injuries quicker than those who wallow in self pity (No I'm not accussing you of self pity). It is hard to remain positive sometimes, but overall it's something you can take control of!
If you're finding things hard then remember someone somewhere is always worse off than you! Spend Christmas day volunteering at a homeless shelter, Read up on the appalling poverty and torture that goes on in the world. Beleiove me a million + people would swop places with you right now!!
Sorry if I sound harsh, not meaning to be unsympathetic at all, rather hoping I could cajole you into taking control and putting a smile on your face. Remember emotions follow behaviour not the other way round, Put a smile on your face and trell yourself you can do it!!
Good luck

Keep your chin up :). I know it sucks, but that’s the way it goes. I've had times like these too, being only 15 myself when I underwent major surgery. I too have wondered what the point was, when would it ever end? I walk with a limp that people at my school comment on and it makes me so humiliated that I want to run away (except that I can’t physically), hide and cry about how unfair it all is. Yeah I’ve dwelled in self-pity like you are now, and who on these boards can say that they’ve never? But the point is, just keep your head up, this is the life you’ve been given, you’re not going to get another one unfortunately…
Talk to your family, your friends about how you feel… remember it’ll get better eventually! Things always get worse before they get better!
Hugs,
Kayleigh :)

Young one, Be thankful...
So tell us what is up with your back and shoulders. Are the crutches chafing your under arms? Is your back (muscle) sore from walking on the crutches.
Describe the symptoms and there will be dozens of people on this page who can provide you with guidance that can alleviate the symptoms.
Now if you are here to vent, this is a good place to do that as well.
Nettan has a wealth of experience and is my personal insiration.
Hang in there young one I know it sucks, I had numerous knee sprains/strains before I was 14. When I was 14, I slipped on ice and tore my ACL, LCL and lateral meniscus. I was on crutches for a long time for that one. My only advice is do your PT rehab, keep your quads strong as you can it could prevent future injuries; but as the Tim McGraw song says "Can't tell me nothin".

I know how you feel! I was only 15 when I hurt my knee. I was forced to quit from the active lifestyle I loved and into a world that I hated. I was on crutches for only 2 weeks as all the doctors told me it was a "partial" tear of my ACL and I would be back playing soccer in 6 weeks. I wish it had been like that..but unfortunatley life throws some unexpected things at you and almost 21 months later I am still dealing with the problem. I had two ligament reconstructions for LCL and ACL in july 2005. I spent my summer 6 weeks non-weight bearing (on crutches) and the next 3 weeks learning how to walk and gain the strength I needed to walk.
I felt very beat up. My whole body hurt, I was physically exsausted just from doing my exercises..and mentally from the fact that my knee didnt seem to improve. I knew all my friends were having fun in summer while I was stuck at home doing nothing. In September it seemed things were finally getting together. I started to feel that things were returning back to normal until my leg stopped improving. My OS said it seemed to be getting worse. My ROM was only at 100 degrees after 5 months and I was walking worse. I had been with a limp for 5 months but recently everyone told me I was walking worse now then at the begging. So I had an Arthroscopy/Manipulation in Dec 13 2005 and have 0-130 degrees. Everything seems to be on the right track.
It has been very hard, i always asked myself why it had to happen to me. Why couldn't it just be a small injury or out of all the people why me? I used to look at everyone else around me and ask myself why things couldnt be the way they used to be. But now I have learned that thats the way life is. You just have to keep going and struggling...even if its the last thing you want to do. Each day is a new experience and I say make the best out of it. I was very upset during my summer always negative and now i realized if i would have smiled..it wouldnt of been so bad. Things always get better...even if when you feel they wont..they always do :)
-
Actually I knind of remember how you must feel, I was in a cast from hip to ankle the summer between my Jr and Sr year of HS. All of my friends were off having fun in the sun. Then in the winter of the Sr. year there was a Sr. Ski Trip, I did not go no way, ice/snow and a questionable (still atrophied) leg. At the time it really sucked, but, I had forgotten about it. Now it seems silly to have been so hacked at the time.
Over the years I have learned to ask myself a simple question when something is getting me down: "will this matter in 100 years?" if the answer is no then suck-it-up and move on to make the best of the situation. Well even id the answer was yes you still do the same thing suck-it-up and meake the best of the situation.
It is all too easy to get in the self-pitty-party mindset. After all we "only" have bad knees and are otherwise healthy individuals. It is so hard to keep perspective, I know. This is a great place to vent and I encourage you to continue to post on the site. you will receive both encouragement and occasionally a swift kick in the pants to remind you that "it is not all about you".
it is all about ME ;D ha ha .
Happy New Year
Hopalong.

Hi Toots,
One good thing in your favor is your youth. Your body has the capacity to heal much faster than if you were older. Just stick with the PT and the whole regime.
And you know what? It's ok to blow off steam here and even whine. We all do it. I know this totally sucks for you right now! And nobody blames you for feeling ripped off. We are here to support you.
Hugs, Nancy
-
HI there
I totally know it sucks to only be 14 and have crappy knees, I was 12 when I first tore mine apart. But you have to remember that everything happens for a reason and its not like you're not going to get better one day. Like Nancy said too, because we are young our bodies naturally heal alot quicker and the oldies ::)
krista
-
Smiley196 is right; you whipersnappers do heal alot faster than us old fogies over 35. She just don't need to rub it in. LOL

Hey thankz for your posts i had my knee op.. leg still the same :'( it just wont bend im soo confused
-
Hi Toots,
You need to sit down with your OS, including your parents, and get him to tell you what is going on and what you can expect.
It may be too soon after your surgery to see the results. Good luck. Let us know.
All the best, Nancy

I assume you are 14 and it's not easy having problems like this and being so young and just want to get it over and done.
I developed my first problems with knees when being 12 so I know how you feel, believe me !!
-
Hayley,
1. When you bend the knee (flexion) how far does it bend?
2. When you state it gets stuck, is this from being: a.) too tight, b.) pulling-tearing pain, c.) feels like something is in the way
3. Where is the pain located: a.) thigh "quads", b.) behind the kneecap, c.) below the kneecap across the front of the knee "joint line"
If you can tanswer these questions it may help when you see the doc to better explain the symptoms.
There can be any number of things that can cause joint stiffness post-op. First of all is that (if I have read your history right) you have been on crutches since the first of December. You havent been flexing the knee this entire time (at least full range of motion). You probably have muscle atrophy (shrinking/weakening) of all of the leg muscles. There may also be excess fluid in the joint capsule.
All of the things just listed are treatable and only temporary, you will have to work at your physio to regain strength and flexibility.
You might be able to print off some anatomical knee pictures from the internet, then using colored markers highlight areas of pain in one color, tightness in another, physical barrier in a third. Get the idea. Let the doc put it in your file. then repeat this each week to see if ther is improvement.
Sometimes words cannot express what you feel, a picture might get the point across to the OS.
-
Hayley,
Sorry you are having such a problem. I can tell you that, not being able to bend your knee right now was normal for me. I too had been injured for quite some time before I had surgery. I also had an osteochondral defect with no loose bodies. They cleaned up my cartilage also. Did they say how big the defect was, or if they did something called microfracture to it. Microfracture is a drilling into the bone (like pricking it all over) to bring blood into bone, so it will rebuild a different kind of cartilage. If the defect was real small, or real large, or not very deep, they may not have done it. Since I was hurt so long before my surgery, I had a real problem on bending and straightening my knee afterwards on either of my knee surgeries. You had been hurt so long also, this may be the reason. It tkaes a while to get the muscles and ligaments to stretch back out. Are you going to physical therapy? If not, then just try to bend and straighten it a little each day a few times a day. Hold for about 10-15 seconds at about 5-10 times each. Push till it hurts but don't go beyond that. You don't want it to hurt real back, just discomfort. I did this everyday and had PT twice a week for about 3 months to get mine to bend and straighten. It was about 6-8 weeks before I saw a big difference.
Just hang in there. I'm sure since the Doc went in there and saw everyting, it is probably going to be ok. She or He could have missed something, but it's unlikely. Your bending or straightening (ROM) problem was normal for me as I'm sure it was for others who had a major lapse of time with no movement before surgery like us.
PS Try not to limp if can hurt your back. I used a walker and a cane. Crutches can really hurt your underarms for as long as you have been on them. Also, if you do use crutches, make sure you have someone who is experienced set them for you. This is crutial. If they are set right, they won't hurt as much.
Good Luck, and if I can help, just yell. Hang in there!

Thankz for the new post.. i tryed bending my leg aint to see what pain it was.. its a mix between the pulling and somthing being in the way.. its like say if you knee could only bend a little way and then that was the limit.. its like that.. like my knee have reached its limit of bending
Ruflly i can bend my leg to a 20 degree angle (not far). Its very confusing its like you think an operation is going to sort it but just makes it feel the same? im seeing my doctor soon so hopfally she will help me out.
im not sure if it is the muscles or not because you know when you can sort of tell when its to do with your muscles.. well it feels more like a bone problem Lol i know it sounds funny but it just feel like the knee just wont go any further. Also i had my crutches set by a phsio at the hospital so i would of fort there set rite..
its rele starting to hurt my back like ive got this rele bad burning pain under my shoulderblades.. Before op i
could cope more with it cause its like i was working towards the operation to fix it now its like im working toward a dead end like a enless non bending :P the pain when i bend my leg is just on top of my kneecap
and even if i try to push it further it wont go like somthings in the way i gausse. i often think maybe if the hospital would of sorted it out or read the signs earlier it would of been better. Enywayz thankz for post and enymore help you can give would be soo apresiated :) Hayley x
-
Does enyone know what it means to have like a.. almost like a heart beat but in your knee like its going boom booom ??? Comfusing i know but somtimes i get that
-
If enyone knows enything that could be wrong please reply.. im at the end of my teather
-
Hayley,
When your knee is swollen, you will feel your heartbeat in it. It is normal, since you are just about 1 month post-op. I know this is all scary to you, but try not to worry so much. Just write down all the questions you have and put them somewhere so you won't forget to take them with you to the next Doctors appoint. When is it? Any kind of surgery is going to be a little painful. Make sure you are keeping it elevated and keeping ice on it as much as possible. You should be putting ice on it for about 20 minutes at a time, off and on all day. This will help the "throbbing" you are feeling. Keep the knee propped up on about 2 pillows when you are laying down. Try to keep it up as much as possible. This will help the swelling also. Try to stay off your leg also. Do you still have a compression bandage on? This should all start to subside in about 2-3 weeks. For some it just lasts longer. It stayed with me for about 6-8 weeks on my right knee.
This procedure is called R.I.C.E. (rest, ice, compression and elevation). Try to keep bending and straightening it a little more each day. About 2-3 times a day. Keep your chin up! It will all get better.
Cindy
-
No i dont have it bandaged up enymore. i had my wrapping taken off ages ago then i was just unsing plasters. now im off the plasters. The main reson im so worried is because it doesnt feel any differnt from before operation. its just feels like its never gonna end. I was lying in bed last night couldnt get to sleep back hurting.. people my age shouldnt have to worried about these sort of things.. these are the sorta things you go thro when your middle aged .. i just feel like the person inside me is dieing.. im the sorta person to get up and at em but i cant.
i try that ice thing and try and keep it up thankz :)
-
Hayley,
LOL yeah that is for the middle aged. You are right you should not have to deal with this at your age. Just try to remember other young people (some younger than you) that have to deal with a lot worse. I am not trying to take away from you, believe me, I know and believe you are in pain. Just know you will get through this no matter what. If you keep a good attitude it will help. It really will. Your attitude on your body makes a difference. If you really want to get back to the "old" you, then just keep putting one foot in front of the other and just keep trying. If you put a compression bandage back on, it might help with swelling and it sure will help with support. A bandage like when you have a sprained ankle. Don't put it on too tight, but enough to support. I promise the ice and elevation will help if you really do it!!! Try to stay with feet up as much as possible. A MUST!!!
Cindy

They never gave me a compresstion bandage they gave me a normal bandage with some cooton wool type thing undernieth it... i still got a normaly badage in my cupboard
-
Hayley,
Great! Keep me posted.
Cindy
-
Hayleytoots dear,
It's natural to think the operation would clear everything up right away but sometimes that is the beginning of the road back to normal. Please stick with it and do what they advise and keep getting to know all about your problem and doing all you can.
You will get better, kiddo. Just need patience and keep on going.
You are brave and great. Keep it up
Hugs, Nancy

-
Well There not much point with the national health theres always gonna be a long weight. ive got me physio starting monday WOO Lol so hopfally that will help because my other leg is starting to get painfal cause of using crutches and ive got artharitus in my hands
-
Hayley,
I hope the physio makes a big difference for you. Being on crutches messes up your body balance and causes other parts to rebel. So the exercises and maybe some massage should help.
Did anyone tell you you have arthritis in your hands? At your age that would be highly unusual. It may just be that your hands are hurting from using the crutches.
Sending you hugs,
Nancy
-
well my dad said it looks like i have it.. got my phsyo monday and go back to school next tuesday in my wheelchair :-\
-
Oh, Harley Dear,
I know this is a very hard time for you. Try to keep heart and stick with the treatments and the physio, etc. There are new treatments coming and others already out there to help you. It will take some time and patience for them to find the right ones for you.
You are in our hearts here at Kneegeeks. And whenever you feel llike letting off some steam, please do it. Everyone here understands.
Sending you hugs and all my best wishes.

-
Hayley !!
You are way too young to have to deal with all this. But girl don't give up there's always ways to deal with problems and as Nancy says new treatments coming up.We are here for you always.

Hi
Keep at it, I hope the physio helps. I had something different to you, but it started when I was about 9 or 10, and was diagnosed when I was 12ish Im 19 now). Its not something theyve been able to do much about but ive found a doctor whos trying. I saw my last doctor because it still hurt and he just said that the pain and the locking (sometimes i cant move mine, sometimes i can, but when it locks i cant straighten it) couldnt be real because he couldnt see anything! at least they're trying. Just keep at it and you'll get there in the end. I dont know how youve been managing on crutches, I cant even make it to the end of the road on crutches, it hurts and i have no balance so i fall over a lot too, lol. To get through when it was bad at school I used to think of all the things i was going to do, like when i could go to uni and get a degree and how all my friends would be jelous. It helped to think of the good things I could still do, like being cleverer than my friends, and despite the doctor recommending it I never gave up horse riding, so I would (and still do) take painkillers and carefully ride my pony. Its awful not being able to do things especially when your young and want to be out there enjoying life. Its not fair. Wish you the best of luck with your knee, keep at it, your doing great.
Charlotte
-
I find it hard on crutches im ok with the balance but the pain. i walked to my sisters house today with them its only up the road but the pain is unbarable. hopfally the phyio will help so i can get bak to normal :)
-
Hayley,
Good going girl! You are very brave and admirable. As Charlotte says, focus on the good stuff along with your fighting spirit.
Did you ever get a cortisone shot? That helps a lot with pain and inflammation. You can't have too many in the same place, but it sounds like you could benefit from it now.
Hugs,
Nancy

Grr. When my dad found out i had today off he wasnt happy now he is telling not to use crutches! Does he know what it feels like NO! no-one understands.. they act liek i want to be liek this and like i dont wanna go to skl!
-
Hayley, often people missunderstand when the docs maybe doesn't find anything which can show why there's pain.
Maybe you father just is worried and maybe also he thinks you need to walk to not loose muscles and then get even worse.
But things aren't often that easy. I hear you, understand you and feel your pain. I grew up like you with problems, but though my parents did understand, but when parents worry sometimes they don't know how to act or what to say.
You have our support here remember that.

Hayley has any of your parents phoned asked again ?
How are you now ?
HUGS NETTAN 8)
-
Hayley,
You should have results by now. Probably this week then. Nettan's right--maybe your parents should call.
Hugs, Nancy
-

-
But haven't you done Mri and were waiting for results for it ?
Hope you feel good and have a nice Easter.
HUGS NETTAN 8)
-
Haley,
I'm confused. I thought you had your MRI and were awaiting the results???
Hope you'll have a nice Easter without pain.
Hugs, Nancy
-
Hayley,
Your MRI was done on Mar 3rd! You mean they are making you wait until June to hear the results????? That's ridiculous! Keep us posted. Hope you have a good Easter!
Cindy
-
Yer i know even when the woman said i would get results in 2-3 weeks not months
-
Yer ive had Mri scan ages ago but i dont get results til june
-
Hayley,
Can't your parents and/or your doctor make a phone call to get those results? That long a wait is outrageous!!!
Wishing you a good Easter and feeling better.
Hugs, Nancy
-
i dunno my physio said they mite of forgot about me..
-
Can calling them every week until they have a copy of the mri results help.. Hell even if they fax you a copy of the results you can start researching terms ..
-
Hayley,
What do your parents say? Personally, I would just walk in and insist on getting the results.
Hope you are feeling better!!!!
Hugs, Nancy
-
Hey Hayley !!
Your parents must help you with this so you get things sorted out and can go on.
How's school and pt going ?
Hope things continue improve to the better.

-
Hayley,
Yes, do talk to your mum about it. you need to know what's going on with your knee. I'm so glad you're not on crutches anymore. That means you're improving!! Hoping that the day you can run with your friends is real soon! :-* :-* :-* :-*

Let us know what happens on Friday. Good luck!!!! :-*
Nancy
-
Hayley:
Hang in there... you are a lot stronger than a lot of people. It shows in how you handle yourself... sure, sometimes you come here and vent, but that's one of the reasons this forum exists. And when you're done venting, you always go out and live your life! You've kept your chin up and that is totally awesome!!!! Let us all know what you find out friday... and hope you get some help for your tongue and your throat...
-
i didnt get to go doctors firday dad had to go in hoipital he sliped a disc in his back so im going this tuesday so hopfally ill get to get my mri's my dad thinks there must be nothing wrong if the appointments that far away im not sure though maybe im just paranoid.. im gonna start try and bike ride again and slowing get back the things that this experence has taken away from me.. one major one being my weight god ive put on some since the hole knee thing but im trying to get rid ;D
-
Hayley,
Sounds like your knee is somewhat better now you're trying bike riding etc. again. I can relate to gaining weight from being sedentary after a knee incident.
Sorry about your dad. Hope he's better right away and you get the results you've been waiting for -- good ones!
Keep us posted. Hugs,
:-*
Nancy
-
Hayley..ahh bummer with your dad..hope he feels better soon.
Nice that you might be trying to bike again. You are working good girl.
Hope you get to doc on tuesday.

You know the scars how long before they stop being red and go skin colour?
-
Keep the belief you will get better and keep thinking it all the time.
I know how hard that statement is but a friend told me if you wish for something hard enough you will eventually get it!
Chris x
-
i had physio today and she says that i dont need to come anymore.. my parents are happy but i feel sad but i dunno why..
-
Maybe she think that you can the routine now and can manage it at home.
Did you get a exercise program with you or have you something from before ?
Maybe it's time to let go and move on in life.
HUGS NETTAN 8)
-
Hayley,
You are likely to have pinkness for around a year with the scar. Try using Medermics or some other scar repair cream. There are a few. Ask your pharmacist (chemist).
Hayley, it sounds like you are not in as much pain???? I hope so!!!! I am so happy you are able to do more now and that means you will be putting this painful episode behind you. Keep being brave and doing all you can including your physio exercises at home and you will be GOOD AS NEW.
Lots of hugs,
Nancy
-
Yeah my knee feels ok its just i get bad griding and if i neal on it its feels rele sore and some times if i twirl then i can feel my knee go one way and the leg go another.. it just seems i make an improvement auto matically im beter. i dunno maybe its just getting used to it..
-
Hayley,
It does sound like you're improving! ;) Be careful a bit about twirling. That's how I hurt my knee when I was sixteen, and is one of the reasons I have the problems I have today.
No news on your MRI? How is your dad?
Hugs, Nancy
-
My dads getting worse with his back. the doctors said its slipped disc. My legs been getting worse latly like the pain. and if i feel at the back of my leg its still swolen and the bits aint in the same place as the other leg..
-
Hayley,
So when do you get the MRI results? It is ridiculous to have to wait this long. I bet you're going crazy wondering. Glad you're better though. Hope your Dad feels better soon. Back pain is terrible! Keep us posted!
Cindy
-
Hayley,
The swelling at the back of the knee is often due to a Baker's Cyst. It's your body trying to protect your knee by making a pad with fluid in it.
I hope you continue to get better and darn, I wish they'd get to your MRI!
Hope your dad is better soon too.
Hugs, Nancy
-
Hey Hayley !!
Send your dad my best wishes for a speedy recovery. So you have more pain again..hope it eases soon..just take it easy.Always thinking of you.
HUGS NETTAN 8)
-
Hayley,
You may be having more pain because you are more active now. Sometimes it's two steps forward amd one step back.
:-* :-* :-*
Nancy

Yeah i had pe today for the first time in ages only rounders but i forgot how to bowl lol
somtimes ill turn round and my leg goes a differnt way to me knee like it all a sudden feels like my kneecaps gone... got that alot today running was hard got a rounder though yAYAYAY
-
Hayley,
Any news about MRI?
Cindy
-
Hayley,
Congrats on getting the rounder :D! I think that's we call a strike here in the U.S. in bowling? And you are running as well! I'm impressed. Hey, things are looking up dear girl.
I did hear of another case in the U.K. about an MRI that took six months to get results to the patient because she was considered not an emergency and so not a priority. I guess they are that backed up. And it's a plus that you are not an emergency.
Keep at it. Hugs, Nancy
-
yeah that goods but i dunno i think i just want somone to explain why it happend like who comes it got stuck like that.. and why i still get my kneecap going anywhere it likes and still swolen jsut anoyed i think..
had to get my cruis cancled cuse of my dads back cause he dont get payed if he dont go to work which is major bummer was looking for to resting..
-
Hang in there Hayley..it can take a while for you to get back all strenght so the knee work as it should.

So glad you are getting better all the time, but sad that your dad is having back trouble. There are lots of things they can do for that. Hope he is getting good care and that you will keep moving ahead.
Hugs, Nancy
-
well now ive found out we mite have to move casue my dad cant work.. and my dad mite be in a wheelchair but nexxt year, seems i get better and he gets worse..
-
Ohh so sorry to hear about your dad..do they know what's causing his back problem..maybe someone else can help him. I'm in wheelchair 100% due to kneedamage and spinaldamage.

here we go again.. tuesday at school having laugh with mates kiking out shoes off (long story) and my knee did that thing again id lyke to say disloacted but you never know.. so now my knees rele sore again feels lyke all my hard works been for nothing just as i was starting to run again.. its lyke im being built up to fall.. anyways i cant walk on it i think im getting used to it very painful still clicking alot .. any ideas why this is still happening?
-
Maybe you need to be more careful about yourself and think of what you are doing.
Sorry to say that but it's very important when you rehab a hurt knee to think of that.
Hope it get better with ice, elevate and rest.
HUGS NETTAN 8)
-
ye i know im always carfall and that lyke if it hurts sit out of pe and running ect.. but somthing as simple as kicking my leg out? i dun get it..
-
Hayley, if your leg isn't strong enough yet with muscles supporting your knee, it's not strange if it happens when you kick out the leg..I have not any muscles hardly at all in my left and even a little move can upset and make the leg really bad.
HUGS NETTAN 8)
-
ye i suppose.. but i dont have to go physio anymore.. so i dunno who to make it stronger..
-
Continue with the excercises you did there at home. Thought you did that still.
-
she never gave me any to continue with..
-
Call her back and try get some programme if that's possible..often if you have kneeproblems you need to continue with the excercises.
-
im got hospital friday anyway to get my mri results so maybe somone will say sumin
-
GOOD LUCK Hayley...hope the results are good. Please let me know how it goes. By the way how are you feeling ?
HUGS NETTAN 8)
-
ye im ok bday yesterday so tht was good
-
I had my mri results it showed nothing new but i did have some sprains..
-
So what are your doc saying about it Hayley...?
Hope you're dad is doing better too.
HUGS NETTAN 8)
-
There saying.. that i should go back to physio and if it continues to hurt n do that poppin thing to have some cartalage things implanted or somthing :S
-
you still have cartilage damage ?
-
i think so.. i dunno they never tell me streight
-
Hayley,
The MRI would show if you have cartilage damage. Did they talk to your parents about the results?
Good luck and a belated Happy Birthday! :D
Nancy
