What is the difference between Chondroplasty and microfracture?

Chondroplasty
This word means 'reshaping the joint surface' and refers to simple surgical techniques whereby damaged joint surface is cut, scraped, lasered or burred away in the hope that the healthy joint surface will heal over the defect.

Microfracture
The surgeon makes a tiny, quarter-inch incision on the affected knee and inserts a long thin scope (arthroscope). This scope allows the surgeon to work directly on the joint area. The surgeon uses an ice pick-like tool called an awl to drill very small holes (“microfractures”) into the bone near the defective cartilage. The injury prompts the body to make new, replacement cartilage. Bone marrow seeps out of the holes, creating a blood clot that releases cartilage-building cells.

These are the definations that I found.

In theory they make that small hole, in real life, some of us had open procedures to do the microfracture. The holes are drilled INSIDE the defect. They are dug deep enough to cause the bone to bleed. The resulting bone marrow that seeps out is supposed to form scar tissue like material called fibrocart. This fibrocart is not as durable as your natural cart. It is not replacement exactly, it is more like a scar over it. This is done in hopes that the defect does not get any larger.

feel free to ask specific questions if you have any. I have had 2 micros so far and chondroplasty (among other things)
