Title: Recent Injury - very puzzled
Post by: Nan965 on September 30, 2005, 12:31:55 AM
I'm new here but am really puzzled as to what to do.   I tripped & fell a week ago and landed on my knee on a tile floor. (wasn't able to break the fall at all)  Felt immediate awful crunching, burning pain but was able to stand up and move around quite easily in spite of the pain.   Actually was afraid I might have broken my kneecap as I hit so hard.  But since then I feel no pain when walking, sitting or climbing stairs but....whenever I forget and put any pressure at all on that knee (i.e. putting my knee on the bed to reach across it) the pain is immediate and very, very painful.  Burning and kind of a crunching feeling.  Also, if I touch the inside of my knee, I can feel it on the outside - kind of funny feeling. If I touch the outside of the knee, it feels numb.  Once the pain subsides though, I'm back to ok again.  I hate to go to the dr. and appear a "wus" if I've only bruised something but have never done anything to my knee at all and really don't have a clue if this could be serious enough to pursue medically.   Very, very miminal swelling if any and no bruising visable.   Have any of you had this type of injury and can direct me in what I should be doing or watching for?  Any help would be much appreciated!   Thanks, Nancy

Personally, I think it's always worth it to see a doctor. What's to lose? If it's nothing, then you can set your mind at ease. If it is something, appropriate treatment can be started.

Don't worry about being labelled a wuss. Who cares what anyone else thinks? If you're in pain and it's bothering you then get it checked out.

Check this out. You will feel sorry afterwards if you develop serious problems just because you didn't want to bother a doc. Go see a orthopedic surgeon specialized on knees.

Nan965,

You should get it checked out anyway. You're knee shouldn't crunch like that and you shouldn't have any pain from putting a small amount of pressure on it. Go and see your doc. If you don't get anywhere or are labelled a "wus" insist on seeing a knee specialist. Probably isn't anything serious to worry about but don't know for sure that what you have done to it won't develop into something much later on.

Keep us posted.

I think you should see someone.  That kind of pain doesnt sound like the sort you want to just put up with.  They wont think you're a wuss, sounds to me like its very painful, even if it is just bruised, and you need some kind of advice on pain relief.

It may be worth a trip to your local A&E dept or minor injuries clinic at a quieter time as you will get checked over and get the x-rays done that you are bound to be sent for. No offence to GPs but I've found so far that they are often at a loss what to do with knee injuries apart from physio or referral. You could phone your docs surgery for advice if in doubt but it really is worth getting it checked out as if you have done some damage (which sounds very likely), the sooner you get it checked the sooner you can be on your road to recovery. Good luck!
