Title: Kneecap fracture - how long to heel, can I walk?
Post by: polanki_in on September 03, 2005, 04:18:50 PM

I am new to this forum; have no idea where to post my query. Normally kneecap is fractured in accidents or adventures sports, unfortunately I break my kneecap while I was walking on the road. I could not see the chain in my way and fell down (on my knees!!). Kneecap was fractured in two pieces, fortunately it was not displaced and no surgery was required.

I never had a fracture in my life and was not aware about time to heel the kneecap. 15 days after the fracture I went to doctor who told me that it will require at least 6 weeks to heel. I saw the x-ray and there was no heeling, seeing which I got depressed.

Doctor have advised to take calcium rich diet and also walk

Is it fine to walk and give pressure on the fractured leg?

Any other precaution should I take and any other suggestion which will help in fast recovery.

Many thanks in advance

Is your doctor an orthapedist?  If not, you should go to one. The doctor should really have told you that information. The healing process is so dependent on the location, severity, type of fracture.  I would suggest that you ask the doctor these questions and if you are not satisfied with his response, get a second opinion.

About 6 years ago, I broke my kneecap.  Picture slamming the point of a hard boiled egg on a counter.  There are lots of circular fractures and the area is somewhat depressed toward to inside of the egg.  That is what my  break looked like.  I went to an orthapedist who put me in an imobilizer for 24/7 for at least three weeks.  I was not impressed by this doctor so I went to another orthapedist four days later.  The second orthapedist told me that the break was not in a weight baring area.  When I was waliking with crutches, I had to use the imobilizer and was able to weight bare as tolerated. He wanted me to remove the imobilizer when I was sitting down or laying on the couch etc so that the quads wouldn't atrophy and the knee wouldn't stiffen up.  About three weeks later once xrays showed that there was some decent healing, he put me in a hinged knee brace and I was able to get rid of the crutches.  I used the hinged knee brace for about 4 or 5 weeks.  The knee felt fine and I never needed physical therapy.

Again, each fracture is different so you really should talke to the doctor about whether or not you could weight bare.  Good luck

I also broke my kneecap across (transverse). It came apart in two pieces and I had surgery to put the pieces together. I wonder if the reason why your kneecap isn't coming together is that your leg muscles are pulling the pieces apart instead of together. You should get a second opinion if you can.
