Title: knee cartlidge question can it grow back ?
Post by: JBL on May 24, 2005, 08:48:47 AM
If a person is walking bone on bone and rested long periods of time, did very little activity, can cartlidge grow back in that area or is it once its gone it's gone and walking bone on bone forever?

Just wanted to know what the board members view was on this?

Simple answer: No. It won't grow back on it's own.

But.....there are some procedures that can be done (can't remember names) where they drill little holes in to the bone which causes it to bleed and a different sort of cartilage can form. This cartilage isn't as strong as the cartilage that should be there though and iirc the procedure can be a bit hit and miss. There are other procedures where they implant cartilage from a non-load bearing area of the knee (or from a cadaver I think) on to a load bearing area where the cartilage has worn away. I'm half asleep though at mo so I have probably missed something or imagined something lol

JBL, articular cart. has no blood supply of its own so it cannot grow back. there are several procedures to help replace the lost cart. with fibercart. but it is not as strong as the original cart.
you can also have an allograft (cadaver transplant)
some choices are:
microfracture
OATS
ACI
There is a whole section on these down at the bottom of the boards.
check out those sites.

:D  Thanks ProfLibstrom  8)   and Missy,

For your wisdom, it was just a thought that came while I was here and just needed some feedback, because the done thing these days is replacements but someone may have other ideas.   :P

Thanks and all the best for everyone.

Lots of Hugs  :-*
