Title: Update on my knee
Post by: uacats70 on April 29, 2005, 06:57:35 PM
Well, let's see... I have been seeing an orthopedic surgeon that specializes in Sports Medicine. A recap of my injuries... I have my lateral femoral chondyl is worn away as well as my tibial spine... my degeneration is severe according to my Orthopod. He said that osteochondryl allograft/autograph is not suitable for me. He said he would not do knee replacement on me because I am too active and it would not take successfully. He prescribed Relafen, even though I told him that I am hypersensitive to medication. He assured me I would not have side affects... I took it and did have side effects. He told me he wants to wait for advancements in Carticel even though I told him that I am allergic to every known anti-biotic. (you have to be on an antibiotic regimen for two weeks before and after Carticel) I mentioned MicroFracture but he sluffs it off like that is a joke... I am going to get another opinion. This is BS! I am in pain... my knee goes out on me 2-5 times a month and then I am disabled for 3-5 days afterward. Does anyone else know any viable solutions for my knee?? I just want to be fixed. I just want to play sports again.

Do you know of any other surgical options for me. I am only 34 years old... My doc said... what do you expect when you played sports since you were 10 years old 6 nights a week!?!?!

I would get a second opinion!!

Microfracture will only work on smaller defects. It cannot fill in large areas as it need a side of good cartilage to adhear to.

Do you know how large your defects are?? TKR would take you out of sports for good.

If your defects are only on one side has anyone said anything about an osteotomy. My husband had his at 34 because he is extremely active also but he only had defects on the medial side. He is now back to normal activity with no pain.- except for me LOL

Hope you can get some relief soon!!!

I can recommend some good ACI docs who may be able to help you out.  At least give you another opinion.

I believe it is all on my lateral side... I have joint space narrowing, bone spurs, bone marrow edema, etc.
