The anterior cruciate ligament - this is the ligament which acts as an internal guy-rope inside the knee. Anterior means 'from the front' and 'cruciate' means 'crossed.

There are two internal guy-ropes which cross over each other - the anterior cruciate starts in the front on the tibia (shinbone) and crosses over to the back, to meet the femur, while the posterior cruciate (PCL) starts at the back on the tibia and crosses to the front on the femur.
