Glyn Evans: Knee Specialist and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, London GMC Number: 2250508  Date of Registration: 5 Aug 1976 Mr Glyn Evans is a Knee Surgeon based in Central London who treats young adults with sports related knee injuries and older patients with early wear and tear, or established arthritis of the knee. Glyn qualified in Cardiff in 1975 and then trained in Liverpool and Edinburgh. He was appointed to the Academic Orthopaedic Unit, Southampton as a Lecturer in 1984 with a major interest in external fixation of tibial fractures. He became an NHS Consultant in 1990 and worked at St Mary’s Hospital, Isle of Wight, Treloar Hospital, Alton and more recently Royal Hospital Haslar, Gosport. Glyn has been doing knee arthroscopies and knee replacements since 1985. During his first decade as a consultant he did several thousand joint replacements including hips and knees and developed an early interest in partial knee replacements using the Oxford knee. In 2004 Glyn decided to concentrate solely on the investigation and treatment of knee disorders and was appointed to the London Knee Clinic at London Bridge Hospital. Since then he has performed between 250 and 300 knee operations per year including ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstructions, partial / total knee replacements and correction of bony deformities (osteotomies). Glyn does arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery, meniscal trimming, repair and transplantation, autologous cartilage cell implants, removal of plicae, chondroplasty (smoothing down), removal of loose bodies, correction of maltracking and ilio-tibial band problems. He operates with minimal blood loss using no tourniquet and almost no requirement (<1%) for blood transfusion. He has a particular interest in anterior knee pain. Clinical interests and treatments Glyn enjoys investigating chronic and difficult cases that have no easy solution and likes a challenge. He prefers to undertake MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and X-rays if indicated at the time of the first appointment and uses a detailed questionnaire to record the clinical history. He uses the MRI Scan as an integral part of the examination and correlates findings on physical examination directly with the MRI images during consultation. He also compares the MRI images directly with surgical findings in the operating theatre. Glyn takes video clips of all his arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery cases and his practice at re-examination after surgery is to review these videos with the patient so that an in-depth understanding of the problem can be communicated. Glyn has a longstanding interest in hyaluronan injections to supplement the synovial fluid within the knee. His further interests are as follows:  Anterior knee pain including patella alta, maltracking and dislocation of the patella and plica syndrome Meniscal trimming, repair and transplantation Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction following acute injuries and in longstanding cases. In appropriate cases ACL combined with an Oxford knee replacement Oxford unicompartmental knee replacement for both medial and lateral compartments Total knee replacements Revision knee replacements Computer navigation of knee replacements Femoral and tibial osteotomies using external or internal fixation as appropriate for correction of knee deformities Arthroscopic decompression of Baker’s cysts Articular cartilage surgery including chondroplasty (shaving), micro-fracture, and autologous cartilage cell implantation
