ACI procedure

ACi is an abbreviation of Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation. This is a proven cartilage repair procedure which has been available for over two decades. It is valuable for patients who have a large, but circumscribed, defect in their cartilage - usually of the femoral condyle or rounded end of the femur bone. Professor Lee explains how the procedure has evolved over the years, and the current surgical innovations.

A bucket-handle tear of the meniscus is a longitudinal tear where the torn fragment resembles the handle of a bucket, and can flip over to lock the knee in flexion. Mr Kirti Moholkar gives his opinion as to whether or not this is a surgical emergency.

The procedure under discussion is microfragmented fat, and the technique is commonly known as the 'Lipogems' technique. In a one-stage procedure, abdominal fat is aspirated from the patient and processed immediately to release from around the tiny blood vessels special cells called pericytes, which are re-injected and assist in healing and pain relief.
