Mr Ian McDermott is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising purely in just knees. Ian left the NHS in 2007, and in 2008 he founded the London Sports Orthopaedics practice, which is now one of the UK’s leading private group practices for orthopaedics and sports injuries.

Ian specialises in complex knee reconstructions, with procedures such as meniscal allograft transplantation and articular cartilage grafting. Ian has ‘Centre of Excellence’ status from Hospital Innovations for meniscal transplantation surgery, and he has also been awarded ‘Centre of Excellence’ status by Vivostat for the use of biological glues in knee surgery. Ian also pioneered the use of custom-made knee replacements in the UK, and he is part of the Conformis Surgical Visitation Program, training other surgeons in the techniques for custom-made knee replacement surgery.

He is the Founder, Past President and Honorary Lifetime Member of the UK Biological Knee Society.

MEDICAL & SURGICAL TRAINING

Ian trained at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School and qualified in 1992. His postgraduate medical training was then undertaken in various hospitals across the UK, including Southend, Peterborough, Northampton, Nottingham and Oxford. In 1998 Ian started specialist training in Trauma & Orthopaedics as a Specialist Registrar in the North West Thames region. Ian completed his specialist training in 2003, and was then awarded his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) and was entered onto the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council. Ian was appointed as a Consultant in the Orthopaedic Department at Ealing Hospital in April 2005, and took up his position there in June 2005. Prior to this he was employed as a Locum Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic Consultant at Hillingdon Hospital for 11 months. Ian left the NHS in 2007 and since then has been in full-time private practice. Ian is the founder and the Managing Partner of the London Sports Orthopaedics practice, which is now one of the UK’s leading private orthopaedic and sports injuries practices.

POSITIONS OF PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY

Ian was the youngest ever surgeon to be elected as a Council Member and Trustee of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Since 2004 Ian has been an Honorary Professor Associate in the School of Sport & Education at Brunel University.
Ian is a Board Member of the Federation of Independent Practitioners (FIPO).
Ian’s practice is a designated Hospital Innovations ‘Centre of Excellence’ for Meniscal Transplantation in the UK.
Ian has also been awarded ‘Centre of Excellence’ status by Vivostat for pioneering the use of biological glues in knees.
Ian is the founder and the current President of the UK Biological Knee Society.
Ian has pioneered the use the custom-made knees in the UK, and he was the first surgeon in the UK to implant a Conformis custom-made prosthesis. Ian is now part of the UK Surgical Visitation Program for Conformis, with London Bridge Hospital being a designated Training Centre for teaching UK surgeons the techniques for implanting custom-made knees.

ACADEMIC INTERESTS

  Ian has always maintained very strong academic interests. Ian was awarded the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK) President’s Medal for his research into meniscal repair, and he was awarded a Master of Surgery higher degree by Imperial College for his work on ‘The Biomechanics of Meniscal Transplantation’. Ian is on the Editorial Board of The American Journal of Sports Medicine and also the Orthopaedics and Trauma journal, plus he also reviews for several other journals. Ian has published and presented extensively, both in the UK and internationally, and Ian is also an Honorary Professor Associate in the School of Sport & Education at Brunel University. Ian is a trustee of the Sports Orthopaedics Research Foundation (SORF) – an independent charity set up by the consultants at London Sports Orthopaedics. The Sports Orthopaedics Research Foundation is committed to the study and development of excellence in modern clinical Orthopaedic and Sports Injury practice through the promotion of training, education, audit and research.

Ian pioneered the establishment of the Research & Outcomes Centre at 31 Old Broad Street, which was set up to support multiple clinical audits and clinical research projects, with several projects already underway, including:

A retrospective audit of 60 meniscal allograft transplantation cases, evaluating the different potential definitions of success.
A retrospective comparative cohort audit of 120 patients investigating the effects of Vivostat PRF biological glue in reducing pain, swelling and bleeding after total knee replacement surgery.
A review of 50 patients following internal bracing of Achilles tendon repairs with Fibre Tape.
A prospective study investigating the role of patellar taping in patients with patellar mal tracking, using a patella femoral calliper and 3T MRI at 30 degrees knee flexion.
