The proximal tibial nerve arises from the sciatic nerve just proximal to the knee joint.

 

Branch of the sciatic nerve

It is a branch of the sciatic nerve, passing through the popliteal fossa at the back of the knee on its way to the side of the lower leg and the foot and sole.
