Bone breaks around the knee :

Patella Fracture - New to list - - Posted by Sgt._Slaughter (Sgt._Slaughter), 11 January 2005

I split my right patella in half laterally back in September.
I had surgery on Sept. 22nd, and had 2 pins installed to hold the halves together.

I started physio in mid November (3 times a week), and had the pins removed on November 29th.

After the pins were removed, the ROM was 85 deg, and now about 6 weeks later the ROM is about 110 deg.

Does anyone have experience with this type of break, and have any idea how long it will take regain full ROM?

I am missing the Snowcross season, and I am wondoring if I will be able to ride Motocross this summer?

Hi Sig:

I agree with Kathy.  Sounds like you are doing pretty good in your recovery.  A fractured patella can be a long road to recovery but as long as you are improving, keep going and you will eventually get there.  110 degrees 4 mos post op is not bad.  To give you a bad example, I was only at 60 degrees 4 mos post op.  But don't use my timeline as an example because I had hardware complications.  At 16 mos since my break, I am still at only 105 degrees but I've got scar tissue issues which you probably do not.  Keep up the good work and I'm sure by summer you'll be much closer to normal.  Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Welcome, Sgt!

Did you return to PT following the second surgery? If not, see if your doctor will refer you. ROM comes back sooooo slowly, but PT really helps. 110 degrees isn't bad, but you certainly don't want to get stuck there.

You had the hardware removed earlier than anyone I've heard of. In fact, you are still pretty early in the recovery process from the original break. I was around 105 degrees when I had my hardware removed 11 months after the break, so your 110 degrees less than 4 months after the break sounds good to me.

Get back into PT, if you can. I'll be you can make it to 130 degrees!
