Hi there,
I have just started playing sports again after having 3 recons done, the last one was 12 months ago.
The popping is sometimes when the knee isnt in the right alignment and the noise usually comes from the actual knee cap clicking on the bones. Im no doctor so you should just get a check up and see what they say.
I bought myself a good Donjoy hinged brace to play in and although its a bit restrictive it gives me heaps of confidence and I know the knee cant be bent to the extremes anymore. My knee is still really unstable though, so I need to wear it or I couldnt even thinnk about playing if I didnt have it. You need to be careful that your knee isnt unstable or all the movement can start to damage your cartlidge. Best to see an OS again I think. Take care, Netty

my knee isn't unstable it just feels funny when it grinds and pops like that i am runnung and lifting weights again i have squatted as much as 525 pounds since surgery so i really don't think it is unstable my question is does the noise always point in the direction of having further damage

Lots of people live their lives with crunchy knee and get along fine. I would think that the only damage it can do is lead to the cartlidge breaking up or arthritis. Glad your knee is so stable Smiley, Netty

Hi, I dont know the medicall term for it but I often hear people who have arthritis saying how their joints ache a lot when cold weather settles in. Some say their joints ache when it going to rain. Maybe as you've had the crunchy problem for so long, it might be arthritis. Other than that the joint can get that stiff if fluid builds up in there, so you better see a doctor and find out what it is. An MRI would tell you if its arthritis. By seeing a doc you will know whats going on. You dont have to agree to any procedures but it would be good to see what they say. Hope it all settles down for you. Netty

The swelling will make it feel tight but I dont think it would make it crunchy.
As for trying to play sports, heres my story for this weekend. After waiting for almost 3 years to get back to my sports I started playing again 5 months ago (tennis and softball). This weekend I went to the city to play a big softball tournament and I've done something to the medial lig in my good leg (blast). I did it while just warming up but I tried to play and lasted 3 games and then I couldnt hardly walk so I had to sit off for the next day. I think its because Ive put so much pressure on my good leg for so long that its now weak. Anyway, I hope you can get back to your sport but it can be a frustrating road.  Netty
