Full Patella Tendon Tear Surgically Repaired - - Posted by BigStee713 (BigStee713), 4 April 2003
MRI revealed full patella tendon tear 3-20-2003..Surgery was completed on 3-27-2003..It is now 4-4-2003 and sweeling has substantially subsided with slight pain as I crutch around and put about 25% weight at times on leg. I am a 20 yr old male and extremely active. This injury occured while playing flag football as I jumped over this guy to score he hit my knee with his shoulder I believe and I landed rather awkwardly. That's all I remember. Surgeon says 1 year recovery...I THINK NOT, or is that so
I need some relative feedback here if ya will...Stee

You might want to do a search on this site for patella tendon tear. There are others on this forum who have had this injury. Personally, I had a quad tendon rupture (above the knee). I was in an immobilizer for almost three months. I have had many complications....that's why I'm on this board four years later! But my doctor initially told me it would be a year to a year and half before I forgot I'd had an injury. That doesn't mean you won't be able to go about your life before then, just that a complete, full recovery will take a long time. Good luck! Follow your doctor's orders and don't get discouraged.

Thanks Janet, I actually have viewed the other patella tendon posts but wanted a quick response by posting a new one you know? I've done my research and you're right, it will take time and the proper rehab etc. etc. I was playing baseball and pitching for a junior college in Houston, Texas last fall btu strained my MCL in the elbow so I let it rest this season but was looking forward to pitching again for the school I'm at now ( University of Texas - Pan American in Edinburg, TX) My doctor told me no professional athlete or Division 1 athlee has ever come back from such an injury, but hey could it be that bad
He did the normal suturing the torn tendon through pre-drilled north-south bone tunnels withing the patella. I am in a world of boredom since I was actually in training for n upcoming triathlon in Galveston, Texasand the MS150 bike road race i Texas thsi summer. This changes things indefinetely but with it comes opportunity to concentrate more on my college works that I will do and I look forward to more responses, Thank you all much..Stee

This is my second ruptured patella tendon surgery. My first happen in 1996 on my right knee, while playing basketball. I jumped up for a rebound and it snapped while I was in the air. I thought for sure someone had kicked me, but it was all me. The overstressed on the patella finally gave in. I was out for at least 7 months. The first 2 months, I was in a knee immobilizer, using the CMP machine. With PT every day. The usual muscle shock therapy and massage and ROM. Once I was able to move bend my knee without assistance. Then came the weights and repititious knee extentions on the Cybex machines. I was back playing b-ball by the ninth month.
Unfortunately, I just did the same thing to my left knee, now I'm getting ready to go through this again. Wish me luck. I think I will stick to golf from now on though.

Hey there man, if you can persevere through one tear then another will be no problem, right? C'mon, with these injuries you find things to fall back on that you're not used to normally doing and do these things to your advantage. Everyday being in a knee brace/immobilizer is frustrating just watching people walk or athletes play, but with this as with anything I learn how my injury can help other people cause we're not the only ones. That's why I as looking for such a forum to communicate relative information in a helpful way. Luckily I have my tv and pc right next to each other and with broadband I can stay on forever. I don't go to school so often I just study then go on test day, I've had this discussion with my teachers already. But living away from home by myself is quite a challenge indeed taking the saying If you want SOMETHING done, then do it yourself to another level more like If you want ANYTHING done, do it yourself. Being without help is hard work nursing myself wishing I was back home with my parents, sister, and nephew. But for this injury being the first one of this type for me, I yet have another perspective to add to my life experiences that will enable me to understand where people are coming from and relate in ways that others can't to my fellow KNEEgeeks!
