Patellectomy is the surgical operation of removing the patella (kneecap). The patella is an unusual type of bone - a sesamoid bone - which means that is is actually embedded in the tendon (in this case of the quadriceps muscle).
The resulting laxity of the tendon after shelling out the patella has lead to modifications of the original procedure:

By removing the kneecap, there is very often a problem with regaining extension (straightening), with over 30% loss of extensor torque (power):
