NOTES - Surgical Procedures :
Microfracture - - Posted by myrtknee94 (myrtknee94), 25 January 2005
Hello all!
I just had surgery on my knee and they performed microfractures on the medial side of my right knee along with an ACL reconstruction.
Has anyone had a microfracture procedure done? What are the outcomes and what am I to expect recovery wise? I don't know very much about the procedure and I can't seem to find alot of info on the internet.
Any advice or insight??
Thank you in advance.

HI Kristen, I have had 2 microfractures on my medial femoral chondyle. The first one failed but the second one worked. I think it is starting to wear thin but that is to be expected. Microfracture is a temporary fix. If it is in a weight bearing area, it typically lasts 2-4 yrs. Unfortunately, mine is in a very weight bearing area.
Recovery,,,,, well, it hurts LOL. I experienced bone pain for a few months afterwards due to the fracturing of the femur. That does settle down if the microfracture was a success. It is a long recovery. I was required to be nwb for 6 wks, partial wb for 2 more then use a cane for 2 mnths. ( I didnt actually use the cane but I did do the nwb and partial wb stuff).
the Steadman Hawkins web site has lots of infomation on microfracture.
If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.
