Overuse problems of the knee :

Pain on inside of knee - - Posted by sheppardwk (sheppardwk), 25 January 2005

Not sure if this is an overuse problem, but it may be.
Recently, while training for an upcoming 10K, I've encountered pain on the inside area of my left knee which caused me to stop running.  A little background information, I'm 38, very active, run 3-4 days a week.  Began training in 8/03 for a 10K in 4/04.  Took it slow - increased 1 mile per month, started having ITBS issue on left knee, took the Holidays off and resumed running in 2/04.  Introduced ITBS stretches and varied running on each side of the road.  Ran 10K in 4/04 - 7:30 pace - everything went well.
Then began training for 1/2 marathon in 11/04.  Was up to 8 miles in 10/04, when ITBS started acting up again.  Also, started to feel a nagging twinge on the inside of same knee.  Quit training-didn't run 1/2 marathon - no running from 10/04 to 1/05.
Recently started preparing for a 2/05 10K.  My training goal was to increase 1 mile per week.  Through 3 weeks, everything was feeling good - up to 3 miles.  Last Thursday, 1/20/05, started my run and the pain was intense.  Could only run about 1 block - figured just run through it, but after a little longer, realized I couldn't run - just limp.  The pain occurs when I push off with the left leg-really feel it at the last possible moment my foot pushes off the pavement or stairs, etc.  While sitting, I have full range of motion, I can lift the leg up parallel to the ground - no pain.  I can pull it behind me - no pain.
Any thoughts or suggestions?  Should I ice it, heat it, etc.?  Should I give up on my 2/05 10K and just plan on the 4/05?
Thanks for any help.
