Hey there-

There are a bunch of people that have had manipulations done on this site.  Your best bet for finding out more info is to choose the search option at the top of the page and type in some either of the following: manipulation under anesthesia or MUA.

You will find out about the procedure and also about people's experience with the recovery.

Hope this helps-

Hi,
I am very new to knee issues, but I hadan MUA/ scar tissue clean up done 1 month ago. I had and still have a lot of pain, but I have some serious complications. You can probably expect some brusing and pain in your quads. I was afraid too and I was really nervous about it. Try and do as much research as possible on this site and you can get through it.
Lots of luck
Chris

I hope you don't mind me saying this but after the MUA you'll HAVE to go to PT and BEND!!!!!!!!! If not you'll have the same problem again! After a TKR within 10 days one should be able to bend 90 degrees. Have seen a lot of patients who don't care about that and they come back for MUA's and more. After the MUA same problem, no PT, no bending and again..... So please, after the MUA GO FOR PT, no matter how hard and painfull it is! Take painkillers and ice a lot, ask if you can have a CMP for the first 5 days, after that do active bending exercises alone!!

I hope the MUA works! Sending you big hugs and hope I didn't offend you! But I know how important it is!!!

Good luck!

Ihad no pt after a tkr because the hospital refused to do it because my health insurance would not guarantee payment as I had also been in a car accident. After 6 weeks, I got to a therapist, and worked to the point of tears and went from -20 extension to and 55 flexion to about 98, then the next week, I went backwards, and not even two therapists could get by knee to bent past 70 degrees. SO I had MUA, my therapist told me it was VERY important to start therapy the very next day for at least one hour a day, every day. When I woke up MY OS said I had excessive scar tissue but he got the knee to bend to about 98 degrees. When I asked about the important therapy he told me to REST AND ELEVATE for at least two days and his office would call. NO call and in spite of my multiple calls he never ordered the therapy for over 5 weeks, and so I have never had good rom PLEASE be sure to get therapy and work to keep from having to doit again, It is important to have everything in place to start before hand . Have your therapy already set up ahead of time. IF you have the mua at least do the therapy. Teresa
