Collateral Ligaments and other non-cruciate tendons & ligaments around the knee :

Strained ligament - - Posted by medigangsta (medigangsta), 5 November 2004

Hi,

First I apologise for the non-technical nature of my post, I have no idea of the different names of the ligaments and had a quick look in your dictionary but just couldn't find the terms.

About 3 or 4 years ago now - when I was playing football every Saturday - I started getting bad pain in my knee and an overall weakening of the joint.

If I sat down and "locked" my leg and lifted it straight, there would be a very bad pain on the inside of my knee (both knees).

I went to a physio and he advised me that this was a common teenage problem, and that the muscles on the inside of both knees had weakened, which meant that the ligaments were being strained, and also meant that the knee cap was in a "loose" state and that is wasn't berthing properly into the actual knee joint.

He gave me some exercises to do, and 6 weeks or so later the problem had gone, but then after a few months it came back.

I keep doing the exercises and they don't seem to have the desired effect, and while my knee is stronger, its still not normal as such. If I lock it and lift my leg, there is no pain anymore, but I wouldn't go out and play football on it.

Could anyone advise me of what this problem is and the best action to take?

Many thanks,

Medi
