Hamtring problems following ACl recon - - Posted by mcyi2ts3 (mcyi2ts3), 12 January 2005

Hi,

I had a full ACL reconstruction four weeks ago, and my post op was going fine, until I think i tore my hamsting on the same leg. The reconstruction was done using a hamstring graft, so was weak, but the hamstring is still very painful. i have seen the physio twice but think they are under estimating the problem. Wondering if anyone who has been in a similar position put my mind at ease, as the hamstring is getting no less painful, or offer me some advice?

Thanks

I just posted a little info on a similar question.

I had the same surgery done and had pulled my hamstring several times while in the splint.  There were 3 other patients with the same surgery in physio with me who all experienced the same thing.  Basically, the hamstring is very weak because it was used for the graft so it is easy to pull/tear.  Good thing is that the hamstring heals well.  Although I did injure it several times, I'm at about 4 months post-op and have good flexibility and strength in the hamstring.

When it's sore, you just have to back off the hamstring exercises and baby it so that it heals.  I was adding the hamstring to my icing routine which helped relieve the pain a lot.

Good luck!
